This medication is used for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and men.

How to take

Adult dose

Take 1 tablet of this medication orally once a week. Take at least 30 minutes before breakfast or at least 2 hours before or after ingesting food or beverages. Take upright with a sufficient amount of plain water (170–230 mL) and do not chew or suck the tablet. Do not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking.

Child dose

Safety and efficacy for pediatric and growing adolescents have not been established.

Precautions

This medication may irritate the gastrointestinal mucosa, causing esophageal issues such as esophagitis and esophageal ulcers. If symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, pain behind the sternum, or heartburn occur after taking, discontinue use immediately and consult a physician. Take this medication with a sufficient amount of water and do not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking. This medication should not be administered to patients with certain esophageal diseases or severely impaired kidney function, or patients with lactose intolerance. Caution should be exercised when taking this medication with drugs or foods that contain divalent cations such as calcium, magnesium, and iron, as it may interfere with drug absorption. Additionally, during the course of taking this medication, supplementation with calcium and vitamin D is recommended, and it is important to maintain sufficient exercise and a healthy lifestyle. Rarely, serious side effects such as jaw osteonecrosis, severe skin reactions, or liver function abnormalities may occur; if any unusual symptoms arise, notify a physician immediately. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should consult a physician before taking this medication, and it should be kept out of the reach of children for safety.
