This medicine is used as an adjunct to reduce elevated triglyceride levels in patients with endogenous hypertriglyceridemia. It can be administered alone to patients with hypertriglyceridemia (type IV), and is used in combination with statin drugs for patients with a combined form of hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia (type IIb). In particular, it can enhance effectiveness when used with statins in patients with the combined form whose triglyceride levels are not controlled. Therefore, this medicine is useful in controlling triglyceride levels in various types of hypertriglyceridemia patients.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication should be taken alongside appropriate lipid-lowering dietary therapy. To avoid gastrointestinal disturbances, it should be taken with meals. For the treatment of hypertriglyceridemia, the initial dose is 2g per day, which can be increased to 4g per day if necessary. Administer once or twice a day.

Precautions

This medication should not be used by individuals with an allergy to its components or by children under 18 years of age. Patients at high risk of bleeding due to severe trauma or surgery, those with poor liver function, and individuals with fish allergies should exercise caution when using this medication. Various side effects such as dyspepsia, headache, dizziness, and rash may occur during the administration of this medication, so if any unusual symptoms arise, consultation with healthcare professionals is necessary. During clinical trials and post-marketing surveys, some patients reported gastrointestinal issues, myalgia, skin itching, respiratory symptoms, and cardiac-related side effects such as atrial fibrillation; thus, special caution is required for individuals with cardiovascular diseases. Before taking this medication, it is crucial to check triglyceride levels through a blood test, alongside lifestyle improvements such as weight management and alcohol intake restrictions. Regular blood tests should be performed to monitor triglyceride and liver function levels during treatment, and discontinuation may be considered if no effect is observed after two months. This medication may increase the risk of bleeding when taken with blood-thinning medications, so individuals taking anticoagulants or aspirin must inform their healthcare providers. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should use this medication cautiously, as its safety has not been sufficiently established; it should be used under a physician's discretion if necessary. There is no specific antidote for overdose, so appropriate treatment should be administered according to symptoms. This medication is not recommended for children as its safety and efficacy have not been established, and although there is no specific caution needed for older adults, regular monitoring of their condition is important. During storage, keep it out of reach of children and avoid transferring it to other containers.
