Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood glucose control in type 2 diabetes

  • Insulin-independent diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used for patients with insulin-independent diabetes, namely type 2 diabetes. It is utilized when blood glucose control is insufficient with only glymepiride or metformin treatment, while also adhering to dietary and exercise regimens. Instead of combination therapy with glymepiride and metformin, this medication can be used. This helps improve blood glucose control effectiveness, aiding in diabetes management. It is a useful treatment for improving patients' blood glucose levels.

This medication may cause severe lactic acidosis or hypoglycemia; therefore, it should be temporarily discontinued and a doctor consulted in the event of rapidly declining kidney function or dehydration symptoms. It should not be used in patients with impaired kidney function or severe liver dysfunction, pregnant or breastfeeding women, or patients with acute metabolic acidosis. In the initial stages of treatment, the risk of hypoglycemia is high, so patients with irregular meal patterns, poor nutritional status, excessive exercise, or alcohol consumption should be particularly cautious. This medication may cause gastrointestinal disturbances (diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, etc.), which are usually temporary; however, if severe symptoms occur, discontinuation may be necessary. Allergic reactions or skin rashes, as well as abnormal blood symptoms may occur; if any unusual symptoms arise, the doctor should be informed immediately. Regular monitoring of kidney function, blood glucose, and hematological tests are required. Monitoring for potential vitamin B12 deficiency is also necessary. There may be interactions when taken with other medications, so inform the healthcare professional of any medicines being taken. Pregnant women or those planning to become pregnant should not take this medication, and breastfeeding women should consult with a doctor. In cases of overdose, severe hypoglycemia or lactic acidosis may occur, so the prescribed dosage must be adhered to, and immediate medical attention should be sought if any unusual symptoms arise.
