This medication helps control blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension. It is also used in patients over 55 years of age with a high risk of cardiovascular diseases such as coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, stroke, and transient ischemic attacks to reduce the risk of death from myocardial infarction, stroke, and cardiovascular diseases.

How to take

Adult dose

In essential hypertension, take Telmisartan 40 mg orally once a day with water, regardless of meals. In some patients, 20 mg once a day may be effective, and if necessary, the dose can be increased up to 80 mg once a day. Maximum blood pressure-lowering effect occurs 4 to 8 weeks after treatment initiation. For reducing cardiovascular disease risk, take 80 mg orally once a day with water.

Precautions

This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn during pregnancy, so it should be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. Patients who are allergic to this drug or its ingredients, pregnant or breastfeeding women, patients with severe liver impairment or biliary excretion disorders, patients with hereditary angioedema, and patients with diabetes or severe renal impairment should not take this drug. Elderly patients, patients with hyperkalemia, mild to moderate liver impairment, those with valvular heart disease, ischemic heart disease, gastrointestinal disorders, renal artery hypertension, and patients with severe renal impairment should use this drug with caution and regular monitoring of their condition is necessary. This drug lowers blood pressure and may sometimes cause symptoms such as dizziness, hypotension, and syncope; caution should be exercised when such symptoms occur. Various side effects such as hyperkalemia, renal dysfunction, liver dysfunction, angioedema, interstitial pneumonia, and rhabdomyolysis have been reported, and any unusual symptoms should be discussed with a healthcare provider immediately. This drug may enhance the blood pressure-lowering effect when taken with other antihypertensive medications, and there is a risk of renal function decline or electrolyte imbalance when combined with certain drugs, so it's essential to consult a doctor or pharmacist beforehand. Particular care is needed when taken with lithium, ramipril, potassium-sparing diuretics, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. It is recommended not to take this medication within 24 hours before surgery, and caution should be exercised while driving or operating machinery due to the risk of dizziness or syncope. This drug has not been established for safety and efficacy in children and is therefore not recommended. In case of overdose, symptoms such as hypotension, tachycardia, bradycardia, dizziness, and acute renal failure may occur, and appropriate treatment should be received immediately at a medical facility. This medication should be stored out of reach of children, and the package should be opened immediately before use.
