Efficacy & effects

Early treatment effect of recurrent herpes labialis

  • Recurrent herpes labialis
View approved original text

The early treatment of recurrent herpes labialis aims to rapidly apply the medication to the infected area to prevent worsening of symptoms and assist in a quick recovery. This medication suppresses viral replication, reduces pain and vesicle formation, and promotes wound healing. It is particularly effective when used immediately after symptoms appear, and the quicker the treatment is initiated, the shorter the recovery period will be. It also helps to reduce the frequency of recurrences. Therefore, using this medication at the initial symptoms of recurrent herpes labialis helps to enhance treatment effectiveness.

Precautions

This medication should not be used by individuals with certain infections, such as bacterial infections like tuberculosis or syphilis, fungal infections like candidiasis or tinea, and viral infections like shingles or chickenpox. Additionally, individuals with allergies to this medication or its components, those with severe immune compromise, those with perforated eardrums, severe burns or ulcers, and children under 18 or those who are breastfeeding should avoid using this medication. It should not be applied to the eyes, nose, mouth, or genital areas. It is advisable not to take this medication concurrently with aciclovir, particularly during breastfeeding, as it may be safer to abstain from its use. Pregnant women or those who could become pregnant and elderly individuals should consult a physician or pharmacist before using this medication. During the use of this medication, symptoms such as dryness or peeling of the skin may occur, and occasionally tingling or numbness may be experienced; rarely, skin inflammation or pigmentation changes may occur, and if these symptoms arise, consult a specialist immediately. Prolonged or extensive use may lead to side effects such as thinning of the skin or dilation of blood vessels. Care should be taken when applying near the eyes as it may cause increased intraocular pressure or diseases like glaucoma. The duration of use for this medication is typically limited to within 5 days; if symptoms do not improve or worsen, discontinue use and consult a specialist immediately. It is for the initial treatment of herpes labialis around the lips only, and since it may be difficult to distinguish from other skin infections, an accurate diagnosis is necessary. This medication may cause skin irritation or allergic reactions, so the prescribed usage and dosage must be strictly followed. It should not be used for transmission or preventive purposes, nor should it be diluted or mixed with other medications. Even when used locally, it may have systemic effects, and regular check-ups may be necessary. If vision blurring or visual disturbances occur during the use of this medication, seek care from an ophthalmologist immediately. Lastly, keep out of reach of children and store in the original container tightly sealed.
