Treatment of osteoarthritis (hip and knee)
This medication is used to improve symptoms of arthritis, specifically osteoarthritis, occurring in the hip and knee joints, such as arthritis or degenerative joint disease. It helps alleviate joint pain and functional decline, making daily life more comfortable for patients.
Adults: The usual dose is 50∼100 mg of diacerein per day, administered orally in 1∼2 divided doses after meals. Adjust the dose as appropriate according to symptoms. For patients with a history of loose stools or diarrhea, an initial dose of 50 mg once daily for the first 2-4 weeks is recommended, followed by 50 mg twice daily.
This drug should not be used for patients with certain diseases. It should not be administered to patients with inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal obstruction syndrome, or unexplained abdominal pain. It should also not be used in patients who have allergies to this drug or its components, a history of liver disease, or in children under 15 years of age. Caution is advised for patients with a history of small intestine or colon disorders, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and elderly patients over 65 years old. Elderly patients may require a reduced dosage. While taking this drug, adverse gastrointestinal reactions such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, and gastrointestinal disorders may occur. Particularly, long-term use may lead to serious issues such as gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcers, or perforation, hence caution is necessary. Additionally, skin itching, rash, or eczema may occur, and liver enzyme levels may increase due to liver function abnormalities. During long-term use, it is essential to follow the doctor's instructions; if diarrhea occurs, immediate cessation of the drug and consultation with a doctor is advised to prevent dehydration or electrolyte imbalances. In cases of liver function problems, due to the risk of hepatotoxicity, alcohol consumption should be avoided, and if any symptoms of liver damage appear, administration should be stopped immediately. This drug may interfere with the absorption of antacids or drugs containing calcium, magnesium, or aluminum, so it is advisable to take them at least 2 hours apart. When taken with diuretics, the diuretic effect may be intensified, increasing the risk of dehydration and hypokalemia, so caution is required. Additionally, caution is warranted when used together with cardiac glycosides as it may increase the risk of arrhythmias. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should ideally avoid this medication as it may affect the fetus or newborn. In cases of overdose, severe diarrhea may occur, and appropriate treatment, such as electrolyte supplementation, is necessary.
