Reduces LDL cholesterol in hypercholesterolemia and familial hypercholesterolemia, inhibits the progression of atherosclerosis, and decreases the risk of cardiovascular disease.
This medication is used in various conditions related to hypercholesterolemia. It is used as an adjunct when diet and exercise alone do not control common hypercholesterolemia and mixed hyperlipidemia. It is also effective as an adjunct to diet in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia or primary dysbetalipoproteinemia. It may help lower cholesterol levels in pediatric patients aged 10 to 17 years with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. Additionally, it is used to reduce the risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, and revascularization in adult patients at high risk for cardiovascular disease. This medication effectively improves cholesterol and other lipid levels for these conditions, enhancing health.
For the treatment of primary hypercholesterolemia, mixed hyperlipidemia, primary dysbetalipoproteinemia, and homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, administer once daily at any time of day, irrespective of meals. The initial dosage is 5 milligrams, and the maintenance dosage is 10 milligrams. If necessary, adjust the dosage in increments up to a maximum of 20 milligrams, with an interval of 4 weeks or more.
For pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (ages 10 to 17), the usual dosing is 5 milligrams to 20 milligrams once daily. The dosage should be adjusted individually based on treatment goals with intervals of 4 weeks or more.
