Improvement in cholesterol and lipids in hypercholesterolemia (primary, familial) and mixed hyperlipidemia
This medication helps reduce elevated total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, ApoB protein, and triglycerides in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed hyperlipidemia while increasing 'good' HDL-cholesterol. It is particularly used as an adjunct therapy for patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia or when alternative therapies are not suitable. It is important to confirm the underlying causes of dyslipidemia influenced by other health conditions or medications and treat them, in conjunction with dietary therapy during treatment. This drug is used to effectively manage lipid levels to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
This medication should be taken once daily in the evening, regardless of meals. The dosage range for patients with primary hypercholesterolemia is 10/10mg to 10/40mg per day, with the generally recommended initial dose being 10/20mg per day. Patients with less need for LDL-cholesterol reduction may start with 10/10mg per day. After starting the treatment or adjusting the dosage, check the serum lipid levels after an interval of at least four weeks.
This medication may cause muscle-related side effects such as myopathy and rhabdomyolysis. Caution is especially required when taking high doses or using with certain medications, as the risk may increase. This medication should not be used in patients with hypersensitivity to its ingredients, severe liver dysfunction, or in pregnant or nursing women. It should be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is confirmed, as it may be harmful to the fetus. Patients with liver dysfunction should have regular liver function tests while using this medication, and it should be stopped immediately if liver damage is suspected. If muscle pain, weakness, or discomfort occurs during usage, consult a doctor immediately, and it may be necessary to discontinue the medication if these symptoms worsen or persist. This medication may interact with several other drugs, so inform healthcare providers if taking other medications, especially with CYP3A4 inhibitors, fibrates, or anticoagulants. Elderly patients or those with reduced kidney function may be more sensitive to side effects, requiring extra caution while using the medication. It is advisable to avoid grapefruit juice or excessive grapefruit consumption during treatment, and do not change or stop the dosage without consulting a healthcare provider. This medication may elevate blood sugar levels, so patients at risk for diabetes should monitor their blood sugar levels regularly. Safety and efficacy have not been adequately established in children and adolescents, so expert guidance is necessary when used. There is no specific antidote for overdose, so in suspected cases, seek immediate medical attention for appropriate treatment.
