Reduction of the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, improvement of hyperlipidemia
This medication helps reduce the risks of myocardial infarction, stroke, and angina in adults with multiple cardiovascular risk factors and patients with type 2 diabetes. Additionally, in adult patients with clinical evidence, it decreases the risk of hospitalization due to myocardial infarction, stroke, vascular reconstruction, and congestive heart failure. Furthermore, it is used in hyperlipidemic patients to lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo-B protein, and triglyceride levels, while raising HDL cholesterol. Particularly, it assists in cholesterol management in young patients with dyslipidemia who have poor dietary reaction and a family history or other risk factors. Overall, this medication is effectively used for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases and improvement of hyperlipidemia.
The recommended initial dose for treating hyperlipidemia is 10 mg of atorvastatin once daily; if greater LDL-cholesterol reduction is needed, it may start at 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. The dose can be adjusted within a range of 10 to 80 mg once daily, individualized according to treatment goals and patient response. Lipid levels should be analyzed within 2 to 4 weeks after starting treatment or dose adjustment.
The recommended initial dose for pediatric patients (ages 10 to 17) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia is 10 mg once daily, with a maximum dose of 20 mg per day. Dose adjustments should be made with intervals of 4 weeks or more according to treatment goals.

Patients who consume a lot of alcohol or have a history of liver disease should take this medication with caution. Patients with decreased kidney function are at higher risk for muscle-related side effects and should be closely monitored. This medication may have increased risk of side effects due to interactions when taken with certain drugs, so inform your doctor or pharmacist of any other medications being taken. Caution is especially needed when co-administered with some antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals, specific blood pressure medications, and other lipid-lowering agents. It is essential to monitor liver function and muscle condition regularly through blood tests while taking this medication.
