Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication is used to help control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes by using alogliptin and metformin together. It is more effective when combined with dietary and exercise therapy and helps in stable management of blood sugar levels. This can improve essential blood sugar levels for diabetes management and prevent exacerbation of symptoms, supporting patients in maintaining a healthier daily life.
This medication is taken twice daily with meals, and dosage increases should be made gradually. 1. If not previously treated with metformin: The initial dose is 12.5/500 mg taken twice daily, 1 tablet at a time, with possible increase to 12.5/1000 mg taken twice daily, 1 tablet at a time. 2. When blood sugar control is inadequate with metformin monotherapy: Alogliptin 12.5 mg twice daily should be combined with the existing dose of metformin.
This medication can cause severe lactic acidosis or hypoglycemia, so caution is necessary. It should not be administered to patients who have hypersensitivity to this drug's components or similar drugs or to patients with moderate to severe renal impairment. Patients with impaired renal function due to heart failure, acute myocardial infarction, sepsis, etc., may also be at risk when using this medication. If undergoing tests using radiological iodinated contrast agents, this medication should be stopped 48 hours prior to the test and should only be resumed after renal function has been confirmed to be normal. It should not be used in patients with type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe infections, or pre- and post-operative patients. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take this medication for safety reasons. Patients with irregular eating habits, inadequate food intake, engaging in vigorous exercise, or combining with other drugs are at higher risk for hypoglycemia or lactic acidosis and should be cautious. While taking this medication, side effects such as diarrhea, headache, upper respiratory infection, back pain, and urinary tract infection may occur, and if symptoms appear, consultation with a physician is advised. Lactic acidosis is a rare but very serious side effect; if symptoms such as fatigue, muscle pain, difficulty breathing, or abdominal pain occur, immediate medical attention should be sought. If symptoms of acute pancreatitis are suspected, intake should be discontinued immediately, and medical attention should be taken; if severe allergic reactions or skin adverse reactions occur, it should be stopped immediately. If liver dysfunction is suspected, liver function tests should be performed, and if enzyme levels are elevated or symptoms persist, this medication should be discontinued. Renal function should be regularly checked to ensure it remains within normal limits, and if renal function declines, this medication should be stopped. Especially before and after surgery or radiological examinations, this medication should be temporarily discontinued and resumed only after renal function recovery. Alcohol may increase the risk of lactic acidosis, so alcohol consumption should be avoided while taking this medication. Vitamin B12 levels may decrease, so regular blood tests should be conducted, and supplementation may be necessary if needed. This medication may increase the risk of hypoglycemia when used in conjunction with other blood sugar-lowering medications, so blood sugar levels should be closely monitored, and doses of other medications adjusted if necessary. Elderly patients may have decreased renal function, so dosage should be adjusted and regular renal function tests should be conducted. In case of overdose, contact a medical facility immediately for appropriate treatment, as some components can be removed by blood dialysis.
