Reduction of the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke and improvement of hyperlipidemia
This medication helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Especially in adult patients with multiple risk factors and those with type 2 diabetes, it reduces the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke. Additionally, in patients with clinical evidence of coronary heart disease, it lowers the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, vascular revascularization, and angina, and also reduces the risk of hospitalization due to congestive heart failure. This drug is also used to lower blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels and increase good cholesterol (HDL) in patients with primary and mixed hyperlipidemia. It is effective for patients with dyslipidemia that do not respond to dietary therapy and certain familial hypercholesterolemia. It also aids in managing hypercholesterolemia in pediatric patients aged 10 to 17 years with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. In summary, this medication is used for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases and improvement of hyperlipidemia.
Atorvastatin can be taken at any time of the day regardless of meals. The recommended initial dose for hyperlipidemia treatment is 10 mg once daily, and for patients requiring greater reduction in LDL cholesterol levels, it can be initiated at 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. This medication is administered in a dosage range of 10 to 80 mg once daily and should be individualized based on treatment goals and response. The dosage may be adjusted 2-4 weeks after starting treatment.
For pediatric patients aged 10 to 17 years, the recommended initial dose is 10 mg once daily, and the maximum recommended dose is 20 mg once daily. The dosage should be adjusted based on the treatment goals, with an interval of at least 4 weeks for dosage adjustments.
