Reduces the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, and improves hyperlipidemia
This medication is used to reduce various risks of cardiovascular disease. It lowers the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in adults with risk factors for coronary heart disease and patients with type 2 diabetes. It also lowers the risk of non-fatal myocardial infarction, stroke, vascular surgery, hospitalization due to heart failure, and angina. For patients with hyperlipidemia, it helps to reduce total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apo-B protein, and triglyceride levels while increasing HDL cholesterol when used in conjunction with dietary therapy. It is particularly effective in managing dyslipidemia in pediatric patients with a family history or at high risk. This medication is used for the treatment of cardiovascular disease and hyperlipidemia.
For hyperlipidemia, the recommended initial dose is 10 mg once daily as atorvastatin; however, for patients requiring a greater reduction in LDL cholesterol, treatment may start with 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. This medication is administered in a dosage range of 10-80 mg once daily. Lipid levels should be analyzed and dosages adjusted within 2-4 weeks after starting treatment and after any dose adjustments.
The recommended initial dose for pediatric patients (ages 10-17) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia is 10 mg once daily, with a recommended maximum dose of 20 mg once daily. The dosage should be adjusted at intervals of 4 weeks or more.
This medication carries the risk of muscle problems; in cases of muscle pain or weakness, especially if there is a significant increase in CK levels, it should be discontinued immediately, and a physician consulted. Patients with poor liver function or active liver disease should not take this medication and should undergo regular liver function tests. Pregnant women, women who may become pregnant, and nursing mothers should not take this medication, and women of childbearing age must ensure proper contraception during use. This medication is not to be administered to children with certain genetic disorders or children under the age of 10. Caution should be exercised when using in patients with a history of alcoholism, liver disease, impaired kidney function, or elderly patients, and muscle symptoms should be monitored closely. This medication may interact with various drugs; inform a physician or pharmacist if taking other medications, especially certain antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals, immunosuppressants, or some lipid-lowering agents, as dose adjustments or discontinuation may be necessary. If symptoms such as muscle pain, weakness, fatigue, or fever occur while taking this medication, a doctor should be notified immediately for examinations. Grapefruit juice may increase the blood concentration of this medication, raising the risk of side effects, thus it should be avoided. In cases of overdose, there is no specific antidote; treatment should be based on symptoms, with monitoring of liver function and muscle enzyme levels. Keep out of reach of children, store the medication in the original container, and transferring to other containers may pose a risk of misuse or deterioration of quality.
