Improvement of hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia
This medication is used as an adjunct to diet in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia. It helps to reduce total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, Apo-B protein, and triglyceride levels. It also increases good cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, thereby improving the balance of blood lipids. This contributes to reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases caused by dyslipidemia. It is used as a therapeutic adjunct to help overall management of blood lipids.
For adults, the usual initial dose is 1-2 mg of pitavastatin calcium once daily. If the lowering effect on LDL-cholesterol is insufficient, the dose may be increased up to a maximum of 4 mg daily. Adjust the dose appropriately, with intervals of 4 weeks or longer, depending on LDL-cholesterol levels, therapeutic goals, and the patient's response.
This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, individuals with a history of allergic reactions to this drug, those with liver problems or persistently elevated liver function test results, and those with severe liver disease or bile duct obstruction should not use it. Additionally, it should not be used in patients taking cyclosporine, those with myopathies, pregnant or potentially pregnant women, breastfeeding women, and children. Patients with renal impairment or a history of liver disease, individuals who consume alcohol excessively, the elderly, patients with hypothyroidism, and those with muscle-related diseases or family history should exercise caution when using this medication. While taking this medication, unusual symptoms such as myalgia, weakness, abdominal pain, rash, or itching may occur, and liver function test results may rise, necessitating regular monitoring. In particular, if there is severe pain or weakness in the muscles, or if blood tests indicate elevated muscle enzyme levels, the use of this medication should be discontinued immediately and the physician consulted. This drug can interact with other medications, so caution is warranted, particularly when taken with cyclosporine, fibrates, niacin, and erythromycin. Consultation with a doctor or pharmacist is essential. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not use this medication, and women who might become pregnant should confirm their pregnancy status before taking it. Safety and efficacy in children have not been established, so it is not used in this population. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and is safest when kept in its original container. Lastly, the elderly may experience adverse reactions more easily when taking this drug, necessitating dosage adjustments and careful monitoring.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
