This medication is used to treat gastrointestinal diseases such as gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastritis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. It also helps to prevent and treat gastric and duodenal ulcers that occur due to NSAID use or post-surgery. When used before anesthesia, it helps to prevent Mendelson's syndrome. This medication suppresses gastric acid secretion, protects the mucosa of the stomach and duodenum, and alleviates symptoms. It is effective in improving patients' symptoms and treatment.

How to take

Adult dose

Usually administered orally: 1 tablet twice daily, in the morning and before bedtime, irrespective of meals. 1) For gastric and duodenal ulcers: administer 1 tablet twice daily or 2 tablets once daily before bedtime. 2) For gastroesophageal reflux disease: ∼8 weeks, administer 1 tablet twice daily or 2 tablets once daily before bedtime. In severe cases, the dosage may be increased to 2 tablets four times daily. 3) For Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: initiate treatment with 1 tablet three times daily with possible dosage escalation as needed.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with poor kidney function or those on dialysis. It should also not be administered to patients who have a history of allergy to this medication or its components, patients with a history of acute porphyria, patients who have undergone upper gastrointestinal surgery, pregnant women or women who may become pregnant, premature infants, and newborns, as well as patients on potassium-restricted diets. Care should be taken when using this medication in patients with liver function issues, those with a history of drug hypersensitivity, elderly patients, those with a history of renal impairment, and those taking NSAIDs concurrently. It can especially mask the symptoms of gastric cancer, so patients with gastric ulcers or middle-aged and older patients who present with newly occurring dyspeptic symptoms should have the malignancy ruled out before treatment. Patients with Helicobacter pylori infection-associated gastric and duodenal ulcers require bacterial eradication therapy, and caution should be exercised in critically ill patients or those with hypophosphatemia or swallowing difficulties. Serious allergic reactions such as shock or anaphylaxis are extremely rare but can occur, so if symptoms appear, administration should be stopped immediately, and appropriate treatment should be obtained. Rare adverse reactions such as skin rashes, urticaria, angioedema, fever, bronchospasm, and hypotension may occur, and if these symptoms arise, the medication should be halted. Laboratory findings of leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, liver dysfunction, arrhythmias, gastrointestinal symptoms, and neuropsychiatric symptoms have been reported as rare or very rare, so if abnormal symptoms appear, consult a physician. Long-term use should be avoided, and treatment progress should be carefully monitored; if there is no effect, consider changing to another medication. Elderly patients or those with chronic pulmonary disease, diabetes, or weakened immune systems may have an increased risk of epidemic pneumonia when taking this medication, so caution is advised. Dizziness or drowsiness may occur, so it is safer to avoid driving or operating hazardous machinery. This medication may interact with other drugs; therefore, particularly when taken with anticoagulants, certain antibiotics, or anticonvulsants, it should be administered according to a physician's instructions. Pregnant or breastfeeding women are advised not to use this medication, and safety has not been established for children, so its use is not recommended. This medication may affect the results of certain clinical tests, so inform medical staff when tests are performed. In cases of overdose, treatment such as vomiting or gastric lavage may be required, and since this medication reduces gastric acid secretion, it may promote bacterial growth in the stomach, necessitating ophthalmic examinations after long-term use.
