This medicine is used for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and men.

How to take

Adult dose

Take one tablet of this medication by mouth once a week. Food may interfere with the absorption of this medication, so take it at least 30 minutes before breakfast, or at least two hours apart from food or beverages at any time during the day. Take it with a sufficient amount of plain water (170–230ml) while sitting upright, and do not chew or suck on the tablet. You must not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking it.

Child dose

The safety and efficacy in children and adolescents have not been established.

Precautions

This medicine can irritate the mucous membranes of the stomach and esophagus, so care should be taken when taking it. You must not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking it, and it should be taken with a sufficient amount of water to prevent gastrointestinal problems. Esophageal reactions such as esophagitis, esophageal ulcer, and esophageal erosion may occur, so if symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, chest pain, or heartburn appear, immediately stop taking it and consult a doctor. This medicine should not be taken by individuals with esophageal motility disorders, severe renal impairment, or certain genetic diseases like lactose intolerance. This medication may require calcium and vitamin D supplementation, so it is important to take supplements if calcium intake is insufficient. As a bisphosphonate, serious side effects such as osteonecrosis of the jaw may rarely occur, so oral hygiene should be maintained, and it is essential to consult a doctor before and after dental procedures. Some patients have reported side effects such as myalgia, arthralgia, dyspepsia, headache, dizziness, and rash, so notify healthcare professionals if adverse symptoms persist. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding must consult a doctor regarding the use of this medication, and safety in children has not been sufficiently established. In case of overdose, symptoms may include decreased blood calcium levels, and appropriate treatment is necessary according to the symptoms. This medicine should be kept out of the reach of children and not transferred to other containers.
