Improvement of cholesterol and lipids in patients with hypercholesterolemia (primary, homozygous familial) and mixed dyslipidemia
This medication is used as an adjunct to diet to decrease total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo B, and triglycerides in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia, particularly those with heterozygous familial and non-familial cases, while increasing HDL cholesterol. It also helps lower blood cholesterol levels in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia when used in conjunction with or as an alternative to other lipid-lowering treatments. This medication safely and effectively helps manage lipids in patients at increased risk of atherosclerotic vascular disease due to hypercholesterolemia. It should be used in conjunction with an appropriate diet, and any secondary causes from other diseases or medications must be identified and managed first. Tests including total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and triglycerides should be performed to accurately evaluate lipid levels, and additional tests may be necessary if triglycerides are extremely high. This medication contributes to improving cholesterol levels and maintaining vascular health in conjunction with a proper diet.
This medication is administered once daily in the evening, regardless of meals. The dosage range for patients with primary hypercholesterolemia is 10/10 mg to 10/40 mg per day. The generally recommended initial dose is 10/20 mg daily. In cases where LDL cholesterol reduction is not as critical, treatment may begin with 10/10 mg daily. After dosing or dose adjustment, lipid levels should be checked after an interval of more than 4 weeks to adjust the dosage.
This medication is primarily used to lower blood cholesterol levels. Caution is needed as muscle-related symptoms may occur during treatment. If muscle pain or weakness develops, you should inform your doctor immediately. Patients with compromised liver function or active liver disease should not take this medication. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not use this medication and should consult prior to taking it if planning to become pregnant. This medication may increase the risk of muscle damage if taken with certain drugs, so if you are on other medications, you must consult with your doctor or pharmacist. Particular caution is required when combined with strong liver enzyme inhibitors, some antibiotics, antiviral agents, immunosuppressants, and treatments for heart disease. Elderly patients or those with impaired kidney function should be more vigilant for muscle-related symptoms when taking this medication. It is advisable to regularly conduct blood tests to monitor liver function and muscle status while on this medication. During treatment, it is safer to avoid specific foods such as grapefruit juice. Additionally, this medication may raise blood sugar levels in some patients, so individuals at risk for diabetes should be attentive to blood sugar management. In the case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, and you should seek appropriate treatment at a hospital without delay. It is crucial to consult your healthcare provider if any new symptoms or abnormal reactions occur while taking this medication.
