This medicine is used to treat and prevent osteoporosis that may occur in postmenopausal women. After menopause, a decrease in female hormones can lead to lower bone density; this medication helps strengthen bones and reduce the risk of fractures. Regular use can help maintain bone health and prevent complications from osteoporosis. Therefore, it is actively used for the management of postmenopausal osteoporosis.

How to take

Adult dose

Take 1 tablet of this medication orally once a month. Since food can interfere with the absorption of this drug, take it at least 30 minutes before ingesting anything other than water or food to ensure adequate absorption. This medication should be taken while in an upright position with a sufficient amount of plain water (170 to 230 mL). It should not be chewed or sucked, and do not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking it.

Precautions

This medication can irritate the gastrointestinal mucosa, potentially causing esophagitis or esophageal ulcer as adverse reactions. Take with enough water, and do not lie down for a certain period after taking it. If symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, chest pain, or heartburn occur, stop taking it immediately and consult a doctor. Patients with esophageal abnormalities or gastrointestinal diseases such as gastritis or duodenitis should use this drug cautiously. Patients with esophageal strictures, hypocalcemia, severe renal impairment, pregnant women, and nursing mothers should not take this medication. While taking this medication, it is advisable not to take drugs or food containing divalent cations such as calcium or magnesium simultaneously. This drug is a bisphosphonate and may rarely cause serious side effects such as osteonecrosis of the jaw; therefore, oral hygiene should be maintained. Additionally, if pain persists in areas at risk of fracture, consider the possibility of atypical fractures and consult a doctor. This medication may sometimes cause side effects such as rash, itching, and liver function abnormalities, so report unusual symptoms. It is advisable to take calcium and vitamin D together, especially for patients receiving long-term steroid treatment. Pregnant or nursing women should avoid taking this medication and should consult a doctor if necessary. The safety in children has not been established; therefore, it is advisable not to use it. There may be symptoms of hypocalcemia in case of overdose, so caution is needed, and appropriate treatment is required if necessary. This medication should be stored out of reach of children, and it is advisable not to transfer it to another container.
