Lipid improvement in primary hypercholesterolemia (homozygous familial) and mixed hyperlipidemia by decreasing LDL cholesterol and increasing HDL cholesterol
This medication is used to lower elevated total cholesterol and bad cholesterol (LDL-C), apolipoprotein B, and triglycerides while increasing good cholesterol (HDL-C) in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed hyperlipidemia. It is also administered as an adjunct in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia or when other treatments are ineffective. This medication is intended to be used alongside dietary therapy and is applied when there is insufficient response to non-drug treatments, such as limiting saturated fats and cholesterol. It is important to identify and treat secondary causes such as diabetes and hypothyroidism before treatment. Lipid tests should be performed regularly throughout the treatment process, including total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and triglycerides, to ensure proper control. This medication is effectively used to reduce the risk of hypercholesterolemia and related vascular diseases.
This medication is taken once daily in the evening, irrespective of meals. For patients with primary hypercholesterolemia, the daily dosage ranges from 10/10mg to 10/40mg, with the generally recommended initial dose being 10/20mg per day. Those with a lower need for LDL cholesterol reduction may start at 10/10mg per day. In patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, the dosage is 10/40mg once daily in the evening.
This medication is predominantly used for treating hypercholesterolemia and helps improve heart and vascular health. When taking this medication, caution is required as serious muscle-related side effects, such as myopathy and rhabdomyolysis, may occur. These side effects may include muscle pain, muscle weakness, and in severe cases, lead to kidney damage. The risk of muscle side effects may increase, especially when taken in high doses or alongside specific medications, so it is essential to inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medications. It is safer not to use this medication in patients with compromised liver function or liver disease. Additionally, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take this medication, and women planning to become pregnant should consult with their doctor before use. Taking this medication alongside drugs that inhibit certain enzymes may increase blood concentration and the risk of side effects; therefore, dosage adjustment or discontinuation of this medication may be necessary if you are taking such medications. If unexplained muscle pain or weakness occurs during treatment, notify your doctor immediately, and regular blood tests to check muscle enzyme levels are recommended. This medication should be used more cautiously in elderly patients or those with reduced kidney function, and regular monitoring of liver function and blood glucose levels is advisable. It is recommended to avoid alcohol consumption while taking this medication, and caution is advised with specific foods like grapefruit juice that may affect the medication's effectiveness. For safety and efficacy, this medication should be taken strictly according to the physician's instructions regarding the correct method and dosage, and you should not discontinue or change the dosage on your own.
