Treatment of gastrointestinal diseases such as gastric ulcer and gastritis and prevention of Mendelson syndrome
This medication is used for gastrointestinal diseases such as gastric ulcers, gastritis, and duodenal ulcers. It is also helpful in the treatment of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and gastroesophageal reflux disease. It is administered to prevent ulcers that may occur post-surgery and to prevent Mendelson syndrome before anesthesia. This medication is particularly effective for treating gastric and duodenal ulcers caused by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It is used to alleviate and treat the symptoms of various gastrointestinal diseases.
Generally, take 1 tablet twice a day, regardless of meals, in the morning and before bedtime. 1) Gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer: Take 1 tablet twice a day, or take 2 tablets once a day before bedtime. In particular, for duodenal ulcer patients, taking 2 tablets twice a day in the morning and before bedtime can achieve a higher treatment rate. For ulcers caused by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug use or for preventing gastric and duodenal ulcers during prolonged NSAID use, the dosage remains the same. Generally, conditions caused by NSAID use heal within 4 weeks, but the healing period may be prolonged in some patients. For recurrent ulcer patients who showed excellent results with short-term therapy, continue with 1 tablet once a day before bedtime for maintenance therapy. 2) Gastroesophageal reflux disease: For 8 weeks, take 1 tablet, twice a day, or take 2 tablets once a day before bedtime. For severe gastroesophageal reflux disease patients, the dose may be increased to 2 tablets four times per day. 3) Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: For the initial dose, start with 1 tablet three times a day and increase as needed. In severe cases, a physician may prescribe up to 6g of ranitidine per day. 4) Acute stress ulcers and upper gastrointestinal bleeding from acute mucosal lesions: Once oral administration is possible, switch from injection to oral intake and take 1 tablet twice a day. 5) Administer 1 tablet 2 hours before induction of anesthesia. It is also advisable to take 1 tablet the night before surgery. 2. Pediatrics Clinical studies in children are not well established, but for children aged 8 to 18 years, take 1 tablet (2 mg/kg of ranitidine) up to 2 times a day. 3. Renal impairment For patients with severe renal impairment with a creatinine clearance of 50 ml/min or less, take 1 tablet once a day before bedtime. This may vary according to the patient's condition, and blood dialysis may reduce the blood concentration of the medication, so the dosing plan should be adjusted immediately after dialysis.
For children aged 8 to 18 years, take 1 tablet (2 mg/kg of ranitidine) up to 2 times a day.
This medication should not be used by patients undergoing dialysis treatment. Patients with a history of allergic reactions to ranitidine hydrochloride should not take this medication. Patients with impaired kidney function may have increased blood drug concentration, so the dosage should be reduced or the dosing interval extended for careful use. Patients with impaired liver function should also use this medication with caution. Patients with a history of drug allergies or elderly patients should be careful when using this medication. During the course of this medication, severe allergic reactions or shock symptoms may rarely occur, so if symptoms develop, discontinue the medication immediately and notify a healthcare professional. Symptoms such as skin rash, angioedema, fever, bronchospasm, and hypotension may also occur rarely, so caution is advised. Blood tests may show a decrease in white blood cells or platelets, and liver function test values may temporarily increase. Cardiovascular abnormalities such as heart rhythm disturbances or arrhythmias have also been reported rarely. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, abdominal swelling, and abdominal pain may occur. Stool color may change or turn black, but this is due to the properties of the medication and does not require treatment. Neuropsychiatric symptoms such as dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, seizures, depression, hallucinations, insomnia, and headache may occur rarely. Gynecomastia and sexual dysfunction have been reported, but a direct causal relationship to this medication is not clear. Joint pain, skin rash, hair loss, itching, and tongue discoloration may also occur rarely. It is recommended not to use this medication for prolonged periods, and if there is a history of kidney disease, consultation with a doctor or pharmacist is essential before use. The treatment effect should be monitored carefully, and if there is no effect, another medication may be considered. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should only use this medication if the benefit clearly outweighs the risk, as safety has not been established. If breastfeeding, discontinuation of the medication is advised as it may be transmitted through breast milk. Safety in children has not been sufficiently confirmed, so caution is required when used in this population. Some urine tests may show false-positive reactions while taking this medication, so it is recommended to use specific testing methods for accurate tests. In case of overdose, measures such as vomiting or gastric lavage are necessary, and in severe cases, blood dialysis may be needed to remove the medication. This medication may conceal symptoms of gastric cancer, so it should be used only after confirming the malignancy.
