How to take

Adult dose

As cefaclor hydrate, administer 250 mg (potency) orally every 8 hours. In cases of severe infections (such as pneumonia) and infections with low susceptibility, the dosage may be doubled. For acute gonococcal urethritis, this drug may be administered in a single dose with 3g of probenecid and 1g.

Precautions

This drug works by binding to certain proteins to inhibit bacterial cell wall synthesis, thus killing the bacteria. It should not be administered to patients who have previously experienced shock from this medication or those allergic to cephalosporin antibiotics. It should be used with caution in patients allergic to penicillin antibiotics or those who commonly experience allergic reactions such as asthma, rashes, or hives. Patients with severely impaired kidney function, those who have difficulty swallowing, elderly patients, and patients in poor overall condition may exhibit symptoms of vitamin K deficiency, so careful monitoring is necessary during administration. Patients with a history of gastrointestinal disorders, particularly colitis, also require caution. This medication may rarely cause shock or severe allergic reactions; if symptoms occur, administration should be stopped immediately and appropriate treatment should be received. Severe rashes or blistering may indicate Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis; administration should be halted promptly if any abnormal symptoms appear. Changes in blood cell counts may occur, so regular blood tests are necessary; if abnormalities are found, treatment should be discontinued. Liver function may temporarily worsen, so administration should be stopped if any unusual signs occur. Kidney function may also be affected, requiring regular testing and monitoring, and treatment should be stopped in the event of severe kidney impairment. If severe colitis symptoms such as membranous colitis appear, administration should be stopped immediately and treatment should be sought. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain may also occur. Respiratory issues may develop; if symptoms like fever, cough, or difficulty breathing occur, administration should be halted and appropriate treatment sought. Central nervous system symptoms such as restlessness, anxiety, insomnia, dizziness, and hallucinations may rarely occur. Oral inflammation or candidiasis may develop. Bleeding tendencies due to vitamin K deficiency and symptoms of vitamin B complex deficiency may also rarely appear, requiring caution. When using this medication, it is crucial to confirm the sensitivity to prevent the development of resistant bacteria and to administer it for only the necessary duration. It may interact with other drugs, especially probenecid, nephrotoxic drugs, diuretics, anticoagulants, and oral contraceptives; careful observation is advised when taken together. Pregnant or potentially pregnant women should only use this medication if the benefits outweigh the risks, and nursing mothers should use it cautiously as there may be minimal transfer of the drug to breastmilk. The safety for infants under one month old has not been established, so administration should be avoided. Elderly patients may experience more adverse reactions due to reduced physiological function, so dosage and intervals should be adjusted and used carefully. During treatment, some urine tests may yield false-positive results, so caution is needed when interpreting such tests.
