Improvement in blood sugar control for type 2 diabetes
This medication is used to help control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be administered alone while following dietary and exercise regimens. However, if blood sugar control is difficult with oral hypoglycemic agents alone, it can be taken in conjunction with insulin, or when the effects of sulfonylureas or metformin monotherapy are insufficient, it can be used in combination with metformin. This medication can help manage blood sugar levels more effectively to prevent complications. It improves blood sugar control with safe and consistent use.
This medication is taken orally once a day. It should be taken before breakfast or just prior to the first meal. The initial dose is 1 mg of glimepiride once daily, and the dose can be increased by 1 mg at intervals of 1 to 2 weeks. Generally, doses greater than 4 mg provide little extra benefit; however, if necessary, doses of 6 mg or 8 mg can be administered. If a daily dosage of 4 mg fails, consider switching to insulin therapy.
This medication should not be used in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or those in a coma. Additionally, individuals allergic to this medication, its ingredients, or sulfonylureas should not take it. Insulin treatment is recommended for patients with severe liver or kidney dysfunction instead of this medication. Women who are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breastfeeding should not take this medication. In cases of severe infections, perioperative status, or major physical trauma, it is also safer to switch to insulin therapy. Patients with gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhea or vomiting may have an increased risk of hypoglycemia while taking this medication. This medication contains lactose, so patients with lactose intolerance or related genetic disorders should avoid it. During the first week of starting this medication, there is a heightened risk of hypoglycemia, so blood sugar levels should be checked frequently. Special caution is necessary for elderly patients, those with poor nutritional status or who skip meals, and those with irregular eating patterns. Excessive exercise or changes in diet may also increase the risk of hypoglycemia. Caution is required for those who frequently consume alcohol or have weakened kidney or liver functions, as well as those taking other medications concurrently. If hypoglycemic symptoms occur, sugar should be consumed immediately, and if symptoms are severe, medical consultation should be sought. This medication may cause various side effects including hypoglycemia, blurred vision, gastrointestinal disturbances, liver function abnormalities, blood abnormalities, and allergic reactions. Particularly severe hypoglycemia can lead to reduced consciousness or coma, and immediate treatment should be sought when symptoms appear. If allergic symptoms or skin rashes occur, the physician should be notified immediately, and if severe, the medication should be discontinued. This medication should be taken continuously alongside dietary and exercise regimens to control blood sugar levels, and regular checks of blood sugar and liver function should be conducted during treatment. Caution should be exercised while driving or operating machinery due to the risk of accidents related to hypoglycemia. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding are advised to switch to insulin therapy as this medication can affect the fetus and neonate. In cases of overdose, severe hypoglycemia may occur; immediate emergency measures should be taken including inducing vomiting, gastric lavage, or administering glucose injections. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and stored safely in its original container. When taking this medication with other drugs, interactions can affect blood sugar control, so consulting with a physician or pharmacist is essential. Caution is particularly needed when taken with beta-blockers, antibiotics, or steroids.
