Treatment of hypercholesterolemia (primary, familial) and risk reduction of cardiovascular disease
This medication is mainly used as an adjunct therapy when dietary measures and exercise alone are insufficient to control primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed hyperlipidemia patients. It is also used in conjunction with other lipid-lowering therapies for patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia and helps lower the total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels in patients with hypercholesterolemia to slow the progression of atherosclerosis. It is additionally used as an adjunct to diet in pediatric patients aged 10 to 17 years with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia to reduce cholesterol levels. Patients with primary dysbetalipoproteinemia can also benefit from the dietary adjunct of this medication. Finally, it helps reduce the risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, and vascular reintervention in older adults at high risk for cardiovascular diseases. This medication is used for the treatment and prevention of various conditions associated with hyperlipidemia.
For adult patients with primary hypercholesterolemia, mixed hyperlipidemia, dysbetalipoproteinemia, etc., the medication can be taken at any time during the day, regardless of meals. The initial dose is 5 mg once daily, adjusted to a maintenance dose as needed. The maintenance dose is commonly 10 mg once daily, with most patients maintaining this dose; adjust based on LDL cholesterol levels and treatment goals at intervals of 4 weeks or longer, up to a maximum of 20 mg.
For pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (aged 10 to 17 years), administer 5 mg to 20 mg once daily, adjusted according to treatment goals. The dosage should be adjusted at intervals of 4 weeks or longer.
This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, patients with allergies to any component of this drug, those with severely impaired liver function, patients with muscle disorders and severe kidney diseases should not be administered this medication. Moreover, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding and those of childbearing potential who do not use adequate contraception should consult a physician before taking this medication. This medication can affect liver function, hence patients with a history of liver disease or those who consume alcohol heavily should undergo regular liver function tests. If symptoms such as muscle pain or weakness occur, inform a physician immediately and discontinue treatment if necessary. This medication may increase blood concentrations when taken with certain drugs, raising the risk of muscle diseases, thus patients taking other medications should inform their physician or pharmacist. Women of childbearing potential should use effective contraceptive methods while on this medication, and discontinue its use immediately upon confirming pregnancy. Breastfeeding mothers should also avoid taking this medication. In the case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so treatment must be symptomatic, with monitoring of liver function and muscle enzyme levels. During the use of this medication, dizziness or headaches may occur, so caution is advised when driving or operating machinery.
