Reduction of risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, improvement of high cholesterol
This medication helps to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It lowers the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke and helps to prevent cardiovascular issues such as vascular surgeries and angina. Additionally, it reduces the risk of heart disease in patients with diabetes. It is also used to treat hyperlipidemia by lowering cholesterol and triglycerides while increasing good cholesterol (HDL), thereby improving blood lipid status. It is specifically applicable to pediatric patients with familial hypercholesterolemia to lower their risk of heart disease. Through these effects, it is used to improve cardiovascular health and reduce the risk of heart diseases.
The recommended initial dose for hyperlipidemia is 10 mg of atorvastatin once daily, but for patients requiring greater reductions in LDL cholesterol levels, it may be started at 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. This medication is administered in a dosage range of 10 to 80 mg once daily. The dosage should be individualized based on therapeutic goals and responses, with lipid levels analyzed and adjusted within 2 to 4 weeks.
The recommended initial dose for pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (ages 10 to 17) is 10 mg once daily, with a maximum recommended dose of 20 mg per day. The dosage should be adjusted at intervals of 4 weeks or more.
