This medication is used for the treatment of ulcers in the stomach and duodenum, gastritis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. It also helps in the prevention of postoperative ulcers and treats gastric and duodenal ulcers caused by NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). It is administered before anesthesia to prevent Mendelson's syndrome. This medication regulates gastric acid secretion, protects the gastric mucosa, and is effective in alleviating symptoms. It is widely used for the treatment and prevention of gastrointestinal diseases.

How to take

Adult dose

Generally administered orally as 2 tablets twice daily, in the morning and before bed, regardless of mealtimes. 1) Gastric and duodenal ulcers: Administer 2 tablets twice daily or 4 tablets once daily before bedtime. For duodenal ulcer patients, 4 tablets may be administered twice daily in the morning and before bed. The same dosage applies for combination therapy to prevent ulcers due to NSAID use or for long-term use.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients undergoing dialysis or those with impaired kidney function. Additionally, patients who have had allergic reactions to this medication or its ingredients, those with a history of acute porphyria, patients who have had upper gastrointestinal surgery, pregnant women or women who may become pregnant, premature infants or neonates, and patients on a potassium-restricted diet should also avoid it. Patients with poor liver function, those who have previously had drug allergies, elderly patients, those with kidney problems, and those taking NSAIDs should use this medication cautiously. Particularly, this medication can mask symptoms of gastric cancer, so patients with gastric ulcers or those over middle age who have recently developed dyspepsia should use it only after confirming the malignancy. Patients with Helicobacter pylori in gastric or duodenal ulcers should receive eradication therapy simultaneously, and severe patients in intensive care, patients with hypophosphatemia, and those who have difficulty swallowing also need to exercise caution. Rarely, serious allergic reactions such as anaphylactic shock may occur while using this medication, so if symptoms arise, administration should be stopped immediately and appropriate treatment sought. Hypersensitivity reactions such as skin rash, hives, angioedema, fever, and bronchospasm may also occur, and if these symptoms appear, the medication should be discontinued. Regular testing is required as blood tests may show decreased white blood cells, platelets, or liver function abnormalities. Gastrointestinal symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, and abdominal pain, and the stool may turn black, although this does not require special treatment. In severe and elderly patients, dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, depression, and hallucinations may occur infrequently, so caution is advised. Myalgia or arthralgia may occur, and in severe cases, rhabdomyolysis can occur, so if there are any unusual symptoms, medical personnel should be informed immediately. This medication should not be taken long-term and should be used in the minimum dose while carefully monitoring the treatment process. Elderly patients or those with chronic pulmonary diseases or diabetes may have an increased risk of pneumonia while taking this medication. If dizziness or drowsiness occurs while taking this medication, driving or operating hazardous machinery should be avoided. There may be interactions with other medications, so especially when taking anticoagulants or certain antibiotics or analgesics, consultation with healthcare providers is essential. It is safest for pregnant or breastfeeding women not to use this medication, and safety in children has not been established, so it is not recommended for pediatric use. In case of overdose, treatments such as vomiting or gastric lavage may be necessary, and in severe cases, blood dialysis may be helpful. Finally, this medication can reduce gastric acid secretion and promote bacterial growth in the stomach, so regular check-ups, including eye examinations, are necessary for long-term use.
