Bowel cleansing effect for colon pretreatment
This medication is used for cleansing the bowel before colon X-ray examinations or endoscopy. It effectively empties the bowel to help observe the interior of the colon during the examination. By removing foreign materials from the bowel before the examination, it increases the accuracy of the results and allows for a comfortable examination. Thus, it is a necessary drug in the preparation process for colon examinations.
For adults aged 18 and over, take either divided or undivided. [Divided Dosage Method] The night before the colonoscopy, take the prepared solution of 1L (500mL × 2 doses) over 1 hour (250mL every 15 minutes) and additionally drink 500mL of water. The next morning, take the prepared solution of 1L (500mL × 2 doses) over 1 hour and additionally drink 500mL of water.
This medication may rarely cause generalized tonic-clonic seizures in patients without a seizure history. These seizures are associated with electrolyte abnormalities, so caution should be exercised when using medications that pose a risk of electrolyte imbalance, such as diuretics or ACE inhibitors. Additionally, it is important to check electrolyte status through laboratory tests for sodium, potassium, calcium, and creatinine around the time of colonoscopy. This medication should not be used in patients with bowel obstruction, gastrointestinal perforation, toxic colitis, or toxic megacolon, and caution should be exercised in patients with severe ulcerative colitis. It should not be administered to patients with hypersensitivity to this medication or its components, suspected gastrointestinal obstruction or perforation, dehydration, severe heart failure, or active cancer. Furthermore, it is not used in children under 18 years of age as its safety has not been established. Careful use of this medication is required in elderly or frail patients, those with a vomiting reflex disorder or altered consciousness, and those with severe renal impairment. Caution is also needed in cases of severe abdominal distension or pain. This medication may cause side effects such as hunger, hypophosphatemia, hypokalemia, sleep disturbances, dizziness, headache, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, malaise, thirst, tremors, and discomfort. Specifically, in elderly patients, serious side effects such as bleeding due to gastric mucosal damage, heart problems, and acute pulmonary edema have been reported. During use, the patient's bowel movements should be monitored, and since bowel movements typically begin within about 1 hour after taking the medication, the speed of administration should be adjusted or halted in cases of severe abdominal distension or pain. If symptoms of fluid and electrolyte imbalance occur, immediate testing and appropriate treatment are necessary. This medication may cause diarrhea, so adequate hydration is important, and it should be avoided in conjunction with irritant laxatives due to the increased risk of mucosal damage. Light meals should be taken before administration, and it is advisable to finish eating 1 hour prior to taking the medication. Women who are pregnant or nursing should only use this medication cautiously when necessary, as its safety has not been established. In case of overdose, symptoms such as dehydration, electrolyte abnormalities, and decreased blood volume may occur, requiring careful monitoring and treatment. The prepared solution should be taken immediately, and any unused solution after 24 hours should be discarded and kept out of reach of children. It is also safer not to transfer it to another container.
