Efficacy & effects

Improvement of hypertension control in essential hypertension

  • Essential hypertension
View approved original text

Amlodipine and Valsartan are medications used to treat essential hypertension, effectively lowering blood pressure and improving vascular health. If blood pressure is not well controlled when using these two medications alone, they can be used together or other treatment options may be considered. Essential hypertension is a condition that requires long-term management, and appropriate medication can help prevent complications. These medicines stably control blood pressure, reduce the burden on the heart and blood vessels, and contribute to improved overall vascular health. Therefore, they are used for the treatment of essential hypertension that is not controlled by monotherapy with Amlodipine or Valsartan.

How to take

Adult dose

The recommended dosage of this medication is one tablet once a day, taken with water regardless of meals. It is recommended to take it at the same time every day (e.g., in the morning). In cases where blood pressure is not controlled with monotherapy of Amlodipine or Valsartan, appropriate doses from among 5/80 milligrams, 5/160 milligrams, or 10/160 milligrams should be administered. Patients with kidney impairment do not need dosage adjustments for mild to moderate cases.

Child dose

The safety and efficacy of this medication have not been established in pediatric patients under 18 years; therefore, its use is not recommended.

Precautions

This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn if taken during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, so it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. This medication should not be used in patients with allergies to its components, in pregnant or breastfeeding women, or in patients with severe kidney or liver disease. In patients with low sodium or fluid levels in the body, hypotension may occur; therefore, the condition should be checked carefully before administration, and blood pressure should be closely monitored during treatment. Patients with high potassium levels should frequently check their blood through testing, as potassium levels may increase when taking this medication along with potassium supplements or potassium-sparing diuretics. Special caution is needed for patients with kidney dysfunction, kidney transplant patients, those with a history of angioedema, heart failure, or myocardial infarction, as close medical monitoring may be required based on their condition. Rare side effects such as headache, dizziness, swelling, hypotension, cough, gastrointestinal disturbances, and skin rashes may occur; therefore, any unusual symptoms should prompt immediate consultation with a physician. Caution is necessary for activities such as driving or operating machinery due to possible dizziness or fatigue. Interactions may occur when combined with other medications, so patients should inform their doctor or pharmacist of any medications they are taking. Pregnant women or those planning to become pregnant should not use this medication, and breastfeeding women should also avoid taking it. Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients have not been sufficiently established, so it is not recommended for use in children. In elderly patients, a similar dosage to that of adults can be administered, but caution may be necessary based on individual conditions. In case of overdose, severe hypotension or heart-related symptoms may occur; hence, it is crucial to adhere strictly to the dosage, and seek emergency care if any unusual symptoms arise.
