Reduction of the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke and improvement of high cholesterol
This medication helps to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Specifically, it lowers the risks of myocardial infarction and stroke, as well as reducing the risk of complications from angina and vascular surgery. In patients with hyperlipidemia, it effectively lowers total cholesterol and bad LDL cholesterol levels, while increasing good HDL cholesterol levels. Additionally, it is used as an adjunct to diet to reduce total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol in pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, contributing to a decrease in the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, this drug is effectively used for the management of cardiovascular diseases and hyperlipidemia.
For hyperlipidemia, the recommended initial dose is 10 mg of atorvastatin once daily; patients requiring a greater reduction in LDL cholesterol may start with 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. The administration should be in the range of 10 to 80 mg once daily. Initial and maintenance doses should be individualized based on treatment goals and patient characteristics, with lipid levels analyzed every 2 to 4 weeks to adjust the dosage.
For pediatric patients (ages 10 to 17) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, the recommended initial dose is 10 mg once daily, with a maximum recommended dose of 20 mg daily. The dosage should be adjusted appropriately according to treatment goals.
