Reduction of the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke and improvement of hyperlipidemia
This medicine helps to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. In particular, it lowers the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in adults with risk factors for coronary heart disease and in diabetic patients. Additionally, it reduces the risk of non-fatal myocardial infarction, stroke, vascular interventions, heart failure hospitalization, and angina in patients with heart disease. It is used for patients with hyperlipidemia to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels and to increase the level of good cholesterol (HDL). It is especially utilized as an adjunct to dietary therapy to regulate total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels in patients with familial hypercholesterolemia or dyslipidemia, and in children as well. This medicine effectively improves the risk of cardiovascular disease.
The recommended initial dose of atorvastatin is 10 mg once daily, and if a larger reduction in LDL cholesterol levels is required, it can be started at 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. The dosage range is 10 to 80 mg once daily. The initial and maintenance doses should be individualized based on treatment goals and response, and lipid levels should be evaluated and dose adjustments made within 2 to 4 weeks.
The recommended initial dose for pediatric patients (10-17 years) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia is 10 mg once daily, with a recommended maximum dose of 20 mg once daily. The dosing can be adjusted appropriately based on treatment goals.
