Treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women
This medication is used to treat and prevent osteoporosis that may occur in postmenopausal women. Osteoporosis is a condition characterized by weakened bones, increasing the risk of fractures, and this medication strengthens the bones to reduce the risk of fractures. Therefore, it is suitable for those who wish to maintain bone health after menopause.
For risedronate sodium, take 150 mg orally once a month. Avoid food or beverages other than water for at least 30 minutes before taking this medication, as food may interfere with absorption. Take it with a sufficient amount of plain water (170 to 230 mL) in an upright position. It should not be chewed or sucked, and lying down is prohibited for at least 30 minutes after taking it. If a dose is missed, the next dose should be taken on the next prescribed day.
This medication may irritate the stomach and esophagus mucosa, so patients with gastritis or esophageal diseases must be cautious when taking it. Especially in cases of esophageal problems or difficulty swallowing, medication should be discontinued and a doctor consulted. It's essential to take this medication with a sufficient amount of water and avoid lying down for at least 30 minutes after taking it. Because this medication can irritate the esophagus, it should not be chewed or sucked on, and it is recommended to take it immediately upon waking in the morning. The effectiveness of this medication may decrease when calcium and vitamin D levels are insufficient, so proper intake of calcium and vitamin D is important. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, patients with severe renal impairment, and patients with esophageal motility disorders should not take this medication. This medication should also not be administered to patients with certain hereditary diseases, and care should be taken to store it safely away from children. If symptoms of sudden thigh pain or fracture occur while taking this medication, consult a doctor immediately. Rare side effects such as osteonecrosis of the jaw may occur, so oral health care should be prioritized, and prior consultation with a doctor is necessary before dental treatment. When taken with other medications, absorption may be hindered; therefore, it should be taken at a sufficient time interval from calcium or antacid products. In case of overdose, blood calcium levels may drop, and immediate treatment is required if symptoms appear. This medication has not been shown to be safe and effective in children, so it should not be used in this population.
