This medication helps patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed hyperlipidemia when dietary control and exercise alone are insufficient. It is also used in conjunction with diet or other therapies to lower blood cholesterol levels in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. It reduces total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels in patients with hypercholesterolemia, delaying the progression of atherosclerosis and is used as an adjunct therapy in pediatric patients aged 10 to 17 with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. It also assists as a dietary adjunct for patients with primary dysbetalipoproteinemia. Notably, it may reduce the risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, and arterial revascularization in men aged 50 and above and women aged 60 and above who have high-sensitivity C-reactive protein and additional cardiovascular disease risk factors. In summary, this drug is effectively used to lower various forms of hypercholesterolemia and cardiovascular disease risk.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, patients who are allergic to this drug, those with severely impaired liver function, muscle disorders, and those taking certain immunosuppressants should not use this medication. Additionally, patients with significantly impaired kidney function and women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should also avoid this drug. This drug can cause muscle problems, so if symptoms like muscle pain or weakness occur, the physician must be notified immediately. Particularly, patients with weakened kidney function or thyroid dysfunction, as well as those who have previously experienced muscle toxic reactions, require extra caution. Since this drug may affect liver function, it is important to undergo regular liver enzyme tests while taking it. Patients who consume alcohol heavily or have a history of liver disease should be especially cautious when utilizing this medication. This medication may elevate blood sugar levels in some patients, so individuals at high risk for diabetes must manage their blood sugar levels effectively. Furthermore, the accumulation of this medication in the body may be higher due to certain genetic factors, which might require dosage adjustment depending on the patient's condition. During the use of this drug, rare but serious side effects such as skin rashes, severe allergic reactions, liver damage, and severe muscle damage may occur; thus, treatment must be halted immediately and consultation with medical personnel is necessary if these symptoms arise. Additionally, this medication may interact with other drugs, so if other medications are being taken, it is essential to inform the physician or pharmacist. Particularly, when used with certain antibiotics, antifungals, immunosuppressants, and fibrate drugs, the risk of muscle toxicity may increase. Pregnant or nursing women should not use this medication, and women who may become pregnant should employ appropriate contraceptive methods. In cases of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so treatment according to symptoms and monitoring of liver and muscle functions are required. Finally, this medication is known not to significantly affect the ability to drive or operate machinery, but caution should be exercised in case of dizziness.
