Efficacy & effects

Treatment of essential hypertension and heart failure (intolerance to ACE inhibitors), reduction of risk of death after myocardial infarction

  • Essential hypertension
  • heart failure
  • left ventricular failure
  • left ventricular systolic dysfunction
View approved original text

This medication is primarily used to effectively control blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension. Additionally, it helps improve symptoms in heart failure patients intolerant to ACE inhibitors, particularly those classified as NYHA class II to IV. It is also useful in reducing the risk of death in stable patients with left ventricular failure or systolic dysfunction following a myocardial infarction. Therefore, this medication is used to assist in the management of cardiovascular diseases and to improve the health status of patients.

How to take

Adult dose

For essential hypertension, valsartan 80 mg should be taken orally once a day. If blood pressure control is insufficient, the dosage may be increased to 160 mg daily or combined with diuretics, up to a maximum of 320 mg daily. For elderly patients (over 75 years), start with 40 mg once daily. For patients with renal impairment, if creatinine clearance is between 10-20 mL/min, start with 40 mg once daily.

Child dose

Safety and efficacy have not been established for children and adolescents under 18 years of age, and therefore, administration is not done.

Precautions

This medication may cause serious harm to the fetus, especially during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, so it should be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. Women who are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breastfeeding should not take this medication. It should also not be used in patients with severe liver dysfunction, cirrhosis, or bile duct obstruction. Patients with a history of angioedema or hereditary angioedema should avoid this medication. Caution is recommended for patients with severe renal impairment, particularly those with very low creatinine clearance. Combining this medication with certain drugs is not recommended for patients with diabetes or moderate to severe renal impairment. Elderly patients and those with mild renal impairment or hyperkalemia should use this medication with caution, especially monitoring their condition while adjusting the dose. Patients with heart valve diseases, heart failure, or conditions where blood pressure may drop suddenly should also be cautious. This medication has a blood pressure-lowering effect, which may cause dizziness or fainting at the beginning of treatment, so the patient's condition should be closely monitored after ingestion. Additionally, renal function and electrolyte levels, particularly potassium levels, should be regularly examined, and immediate action should be taken if abnormalities are found. Interactions may cause side effects when combined with other antihypertensives or diuretics, so consultation with a physician is necessary. Dizziness or drowsiness may occur when driving or operating machinery, so caution is needed. In case of overdose, severe hypotension or decreased consciousness may occur, so immediate medical attention is required if symptoms appear. Safety has not been established for use in children or adolescents, so it is best not to use it. When stored, keep in a secure place out of the reach of children and avoid transferring to other containers.
