This medication is used for the following purposes. Firstly, it helps to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. In particular, it lowers the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in adult patients with multiple risk factors for coronary heart disease and in patients with type 2 diabetes, and also decreases the risk of vascular surgery and angina. Additionally, it is effective in reducing the risk of nonfatal myocardial infarction, fatal and nonfatal stroke, vascular surgery, congestive heart failure hospitalization, and angina in patients with evidence of coronary heart disease. Furthermore, this medication is used for the treatment of hyperlipidemia, helping to lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo-B, and triglyceride levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia while raising HDL cholesterol levels. It is also used as an adjunct for the treatment of abnormal beta-lipoproteinemia and elevated serum triglycerides. In summary, this drug is used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and improve dyslipidemia.
