How to take

Adult dose

The effective lowest dose should be administered for the shortest duration possible. Elderly patients typically receive the standard adult dose, however for those over 75 years, the dosing interval must be at least 6 hours. Patients with moderate renal impairment should extend the dosing interval to 12 hours, and severe renal impairment patients should not be dosed.

Precautions

This medication may pose a risk of liver damage for individuals who regularly consume more than three glasses of alcohol per day, so it should only be taken after consultation with a doctor or pharmacist. If a rash, blistering, or severe allergic reaction occurs while taking this medication, discontinue use immediately and seek a doctor's care. Caution is required as tramadol, the main ingredient of this medication, can increase the risk of seizures when taken in excessive doses or with certain antidepressants and narcotics. This medication can cause severe respiratory depression in patients with acute asthma; thus, it should be administered in a medically equipped setting if needed. The concurrent use of this drug with benzodiazepines or alcohol can result in severe sedation, respiratory depression, or coma, so co-administration should be avoided or undertaken with extreme caution. Caution is also advised for patients with head injuries or elevated intracranial pressure, as respiratory depression from this medication could further increase intracranial pressure. This medication may lead to mental and physical dependence; therefore, if taken for an extended period, dependence should be discussed and managed with healthcare professionals. Patients with poor liver function should consult a doctor before taking this medication to avoid excess acetaminophen consumption, which can prevent liver damage. This medication carries a heightened risk of respiratory depression in individuals with extremely rapid CYP2D6 enzyme activity, requiring special monitoring. Children under 12 years or those under 18 years who have undergone tonsillectomy or adenoidectomy should not be administered this medication, and adolescents aged 12 to 18 years should avoid it if there are special risk factors. Patients with sleep apnea or hypoxia may experience worsening symptoms after taking this medication, so careful observation of symptom changes is advised. This medication can occasionally induce hyponatremia, leading to low sodium levels; thus, monitoring is necessary, especially for elderly patients or those with risk factors. Patients who are allergic to any components of this medication, or those with severe respiratory depression, head injuries, or taking MAO inhibitors should not take it. Abrupt discontinuation during treatment can trigger withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, insomnia, and tremors, hence dosage should be tapered off gradually under medical advice. Caution is advised during activities requiring alertness, such as driving or operating machinery, as drowsiness or dizziness may occur. In case of overdose, serious side effects such as respiratory depression, seizures, or liver damage may arise, necessitating immediate medical attention for appropriate treatment. This medication should be stored in a secure place, out of reach of children, and care should be taken to prevent misuse.
