Effect of replenishing fluids and electrolytes in dehydration and pre/post-operative care.
This drug is used to replenish fluids and electrolytes that have been depleted due to dehydration or before and after surgery.
Administered intravenously. The dosage should be adjusted appropriately by the physician based on patient’s age, weight, symptoms, and test results. Calculate the fluid requirements for maintenance or replacement for each patient, and this drug should be administered based on that calculation. The rate of administration should not exceed 10 mEq/hour or 120 mEq per day regarding potassium concentration. It is important to frequently monitor changes in blood sugar, serum electrolyte concentrations, and fluid and electrolyte balance during treatment.
This drug may cause hypersensitivity reactions, so if allergic symptoms occur, administration must be stopped immediately, and appropriate treatment should be sought. As it contains potassium, there is a risk of hyperkalemia, so patients with poor kidney function or heart disease should be cautious and regularly monitor serum potassium levels. Due to the presence of sodium and chloride, hypernatremia, hyperchloremia, and metabolic acidosis may occur, thus patients with hypertension, liver disease, congestive heart failure, etc., should use it cautiously and monitor sodium and chloride levels as well as kidney function. Particular care is necessary for children, the elderly, post-operative patients, and psychiatric patients, as it may cause hyponatremia; if symptoms such as headaches, vomiting, or seizures appear, immediate consultation with medical personnel is required. Fluid overload may worsen pulmonary edema or congestive states, so fluid balance and electrolyte status must be checked periodically. It should not be administered to patients in a state of fluid excess or hypernatremia, and those who have hypersensitivity to this drug or its components. Cautious administration is indicated for those with congestive heart failure, severe renal impairment, edema, patients undergoing surgery or immediately after, hyperkalemia, hyperchloremia, and hyponatremia. Administration may result in side effects such as injection site infection, phlebitis, thrombosis, and if administered rapidly, local pain or venous irritation may occur. This drug may interact with other medications, thus patients taking drugs that cause hyperkalemia or those related to sodium and fluid retention should discuss with medical personnel before administration. During pregnancy, administration should be performed only if necessary, and special care should be taken to monitor electrolyte levels and adjust the rate of administration, especially in children and the elderly. In case of overdose, administration should be stopped immediately, and appropriate treatment should be sought; blood dialysis or peritoneal dialysis may be required. Check for turbidity or precipitates before administration, use sterile equipment, and it is recommended to change the administration equipment every 24 hours. Store this drug at room temperature and use it only if the container and seal are intact.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
