Reduction of the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, improvement of hyperlipidemia
This medication reduces the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in adults with cardiovascular disease risk factors and diabetes. It also helps to decrease the need for angina and vascular interventions, and reduce hospitalization risks due to congestive heart failure. For patients with hyperlipidemia, it lowers cholesterol and triglyceride levels and increases HDL (good cholesterol). It is particularly used as an adjunct to dietary therapy for patients with familial hypercholesterolemia and pediatric patients aged 10 to 17 years to reduce total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels, effectively improving the risk of cardiovascular disease.
For the treatment of hyperlipidemia, the recommended initial dose is 10 mg once daily of atorvastatin, with possibilities to start at 20 mg or 40 mg for patients requiring more significant LDL cholesterol reductions. Dosing should occur once daily ranging from 10 to 80 mg, and tailored based on treatment goals and patient response. Lipid levels should be analyzed 2-4 weeks after initiation and dosage adjustments made accordingly. The treatment goal is to lower LDL cholesterol, and monitoring should encompass LDL cholesterol levels during treatment initiation and assessment.
The recommended initial dose for pediatric patients (10-17 years) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia is 10 mg once daily, with a maximum of 20 mg per day. Dosage should be adjusted every 4 weeks or more based on the treatment goals.

During the use of this medication, symptoms of liver dysfunction or hepatitis may appear, so if symptoms like nausea, vomiting, or fatigue persist, contact a physician immediately. This medication may raise blood sugar levels, so patients at risk for diabetes should regularly check their blood sugar levels.
