View approved original text

This drug is used to enhance blood glucose control in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be administered as monotherapy and may also be given in combination with sulfonylureas, metformin, or insulin when existing oral hypoglycemic agents are insufficiently effective. Additionally, it is important for patients with type 2 diabetes to concurrently engage in nutritional counseling, exercise therapy, and if necessary, weight loss, as these measures help sustain the effectiveness of drug therapy as well as initial treatment.

Precautions

This drug is used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and it is effective in lowering blood glucose only when insulin is present. This drug can exacerbate or newly induce heart failure, hence it should not be used in patients with heart failure or a history of heart failure. If symptoms of heart failure such as sudden weight gain, shortness of breath, or swelling occur, immediate medical attention should be sought, and the drug's administration should be discontinued or the dosage adjusted as necessary. This drug can lead to fluid retention and cause swelling, so caution is required in patients with edema or heart disease. It should not be administrated to patients with active bladder cancer or a history of bladder cancer, and any symptoms of hematuria or urination disorders during treatment should be reported to a physician immediately. Patients with impaired liver function, severe renal impairment, diabetic ketoacidosis, or type 1 diabetes should not use this drug. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant are advised against using this drug, and premenopausal women may experience enhanced ovulation with an increased risk of pregnancy, thus appropriate contraception should be utilized. The risk of hypoglycemia may increase when this drug is used in combination with other hypoglycemic agents, therefore dosage adjustments of co-administered medications may be necessary. During the course of taking this medication, regular blood glucose and liver function tests should be performed, and immediate consultation with a doctor should occur if there are symptoms such as weight gain, edema, or shortness of breath. Elderly patients or those with impaired renal function also need careful consideration when using this drug, and appropriate treatment should be provided according to symptoms in case of overdose. This drug should be taken orally once a day irrespective of meals, and care should be taken not to double the dose the next day if a dose is missed.
