This drug is used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It helps in reducing the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, vascular procedures, and angina in adults with multiple risk factors for coronary heart disease and in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can also reduce the risk of hospitalizations and the occurrence of congestive heart failure in patients at risk for myocardial infarction or stroke. In patients with hyperlipidemia, it is used as an adjunct to dietary therapy to decrease total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apo-B protein, and triglyceride levels, and to increase HDL cholesterol levels. It is particularly effective for patients with familial hypercholesterolemia and those with dyslipidemia. It is also used in children aged 10 to 17 years with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia to improve lipid levels.
