This medication is used for surface anesthesia of the skin during the insertion of a needle or superficial surgical procedures. It can also be used for surface anesthesia of mucous membranes of the genitals, for example, prior to the removal of condyloma. It is effective for surface anesthesia when cleaning contaminated areas or performing superficial surgery on leg ulcer sites. By providing local anesthesia to various areas, it helps reduce pain and facilitate procedures. Therefore, it is used for local anesthesia of the skin and mucous membranes.

Precautions

This medication is used as a local anesthetic, and its use may result in a rare blood disorder called methemoglobinemia. Particular caution is needed for patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, congenital methemoglobinemia, heart or lung disease, infants under 6 months of age, and patients using oxidants. When using this medication, the skin may turn blue or display abnormal blood coloration; if such symptoms occur, use should be immediately discontinued, and medical treatment sought. This medication should not be used in patients who are hypersensitive to it, have wounds in the application area, have atopic dermatitis, are infants under 3 months of age, or are premature infants born before 37 weeks of pregnancy. Patients with anemia or liver disease, the elderly, and frail patients should use this medication with caution. Note that skin irritation may occur. When applied to the skin, transient local reactions such as pallor, redness, swelling, pruritus, or burning sensation may occur. Take care to avoid using it around the eyes as it may cause irritation; if contact occurs, rinse immediately with clean water. The risk of side effects may increase when used with other local anesthetics or certain medications, so caution is needed when administering concomitantly. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, it should only be used when necessary, in consultation with a physician, to minimize effects on the fetus or newborn. Use in children, especially infants under 3 months of age, should be limited and should not be applied to mucous membranes of the genitals. Overdose may lead to severe side effects on the central nervous system or cardiovascular system, and medical assistance should be sought immediately if symptoms occur. The absorption rate may vary depending on the skin condition or application area, so it is crucial to adhere to recommended doses and application times. Long-term use at high doses should be avoided, and patients with atopic dermatitis should shorten the application time for safety.
