Efficacy & effects

Effect of restoring circulating blood volume and interstitial fluid and correcting metabolic acidosis

View approved original text

This medication replenishes extracellular fluid and balances when circulating blood volume and interstitial fluid are reduced. It also helps correct a condition known as metabolic acidosis, improving the body's acid-base balance. This aids in maintaining normal bodily functions. Therefore, it is used in the treatment of reduced circulating blood volume and metabolic acidosis.

How it is given

Adult administration

Normally, 500 to 1,000 mL is infused intravenously for adults. The infusion rate is set at 200 mL per hour. Dosage and infusion rate may be adjusted appropriately according to age, weight, and symptoms.

Precautions

This medication may cause allergic reactions during use, so if symptoms such as sudden hives or difficulty breathing occur, administration should be stopped immediately and treatment sought. Because this drug contains a high amount of potassium, patients with impaired kidney function, dehydration, or heart diseases should be cautious of the risk of hyperkalemia, which is an elevation of potassium levels in the blood. Increased sodium and chloride levels can occur, so patients with hypertension, heart failure, or liver disease should be careful as electrolyte imbalances may worsen with the use of this medication. Additionally, hyponatremia may occur, so children, the elderly, postoperative patients, or patients taking specific medications should regularly monitor their serum sodium levels. This medication may cause excessive fluid accumulation, so patients at risk of fluid overload should avoid use or administer it cautiously, and frequently check fluid balance and electrolyte status. It should not be administered in cases of excessive fluid or hypernatremia, or to patients with a history of hypersensitivity to this medication or its components. Patients with specific conditions such as heart failure, kidney failure, hyperkalemia, or liver failure should use this medication cautiously and meticulously monitor their electrolytes and kidney function. Heat sensation, infection, or thrombosis may occur at the injection site, and rapid administration can lead to serious side effects such as cerebral edema or pulmonary edema, so caution is required. Since this medication contains sodium, blood glucose and electrolyte changes should be periodically monitored when used together with corticosteroids. It can interact with other medications, particularly those that induce hyperkalemia, lithium, or those impacting fluid and electrolyte balance; thus serum levels should be carefully monitored when used together. Special caution is needed for pregnant or nursing women, children, and the elderly when using this medication, especially since children are at higher risk for hyponatremia and should have their serum electrolyte status closely monitored.
