Short-term adjunctive treatment for weight loss in exogenous obesity
This medicine is used for patients with exogenous obesity who have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher and who do not respond to appropriate dietary and exercise regimens, or for patients with a BMI of 27 or higher who have risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, or hyperlipidemia. It serves as a short-term adjunct treatment for weight loss regimens based on exercise, behavior modification, and calorie restriction. This medication should be taken alone, not in combination with other appetite suppressants. Body mass index is a key indicator for assessing physical condition, calculated based on weight and height to judge the degree of obesity. This medication aids in improving health risk factors through weight loss.
Adults: Administer 37.5 mg of phentermine hydrochloride orally once daily before breakfast or 1 to 2 hours after breakfast. Use the minimum effective dose, adjusting it individually to achieve an adequate response. A dose of 18.75 mg once daily may be appropriate for some patients, and in some cases, 18.75 mg twice daily may be preferable. Avoid taking this medicine late at night because it may cause insomnia. This medicine should be administered for a short period (within 4 weeks). However, to reduce the risk of improper use of this medicine, treatment may be continued if the patient achieves satisfactory weight loss within the first 4 weeks (weight loss of at least 1.8 kg, or weight loss considered satisfactory by both the physician and the patient).
This medication should not be used in combination with other appetite suppressants. It should only be used alone for a short period for weight control, and combining it with other weight loss drugs is not safe. This medication may be associated with primary pulmonary hypertension, so if symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting, or leg swelling occur, you should inform your doctor immediately. If such symptoms occur, the medication should be discontinued. It may also be related to heart valve disease, so care should be taken to avoid long-term high-dose use or combination with other appetite suppressants. This medication should not be used by individuals with atherosclerosis, cardiovascular diseases, severe hypertension, pulmonary hypertension, hyperthyroidism, glaucoma, mental anxiety or agitation states, or a history of substance abuse. Additionally, it should not be used by children under the age of 16, or by women who are pregnant or may become pregnant. Patients with diabetes or mild hypertension should use this medication with extra caution, and diabetic patients may need to adjust their insulin dosage. When taking this medication, rapid heartbeat or increased blood pressure may occur, and side effects such as anxiety, dizziness, insomnia, headache, indigestion, rash, and changes in sexual function may appear. It is important to start with a minimum dosage initially, and if tolerance develops, do not increase the dosage but discontinue the medication. Stopping the medication suddenly may cause fatigue or depression, so caution is needed. This medication can affect mental state, so caution is advised when driving or operating dangerous machinery. Alcohol should be avoided as it may exacerbate side effects. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should only take this medication after carefully weighing its risks and benefits. In case of overdose, severe anxiety, coma, convulsions, blood pressure changes, vomiting, and other symptoms may occur, so immediate emergency treatment is required. This medication should be kept out of the reach of children, and due to its classification as a narcotic, it has a high potential for abuse and should be used according to a doctor’s instructions.
