How it is given

Adult administration

For sodium chloride, typically 20 ~ 1,000 mL is administered subcutaneously, intravenously, by intravenous drip, or rectally. The dosage and infusion rate should be adjusted appropriately based on age, weight, and symptoms.

Precautions

This medication should not be administered to patients with hypernatremia, as it may be harmful to those with excessively high sodium levels. Also, it should not be administered to patients who are excessively fluid-loaded or have edema and ascites due to liver cirrhosis. In such conditions, the drug may not work appropriately in the body. Caution is required when administering to patients with heart or circulatory issues, impaired kidney function, or low blood protein levels, as this drug can affect the body's electrolyte balance. Patients with abnormal electrolyte levels such as sodium, potassium, and chloride, as well as those with peripheral and pulmonary edema or preeclampsia, should also use this medication cautiously. Cautious administration is necessary for patients taking corticosteroids or experiencing conditions related to hyperaldosteronism, as well as for children and the elderly. Administering this medication in large amounts or too quickly can lead to serious side effects, including heart failure, edema, acidosis, and electrolyte abnormalities. Careful observation is required due to the possibility of infection, pain, thrombosis, or phlebitis at the injection site. If side effects are suspected, discontinue administration immediately and assess the patient's condition, providing necessary treatment. It may be advisable to keep remaining drug solution for testing if needed. During non-oral treatment, regular checks on the patient's fluid balance, electrolyte concentrations, and acid-base status should be performed to monitor for changes. Particularly in the elderly, where bodily functions may be diminished, it is important to reduce infusion speed and dosage as needed. When preparing the drug, ensure that it is suitable as a diluent and check for any color change or precipitation before administration. Before administration, thoroughly disinfect the patient’s skin and the equipment used to prevent infections. In cold weather, it is advisable to warm the drug to body temperature before use, and any unused drug after opening or mixing with other drugs should be discarded immediately. When administering, infuse slowly to reduce the risk of side effects.
