Treatment of endocrine disorders (chronic adrenal insufficiency, etc.), rheumatic disorders (arthritis, etc.) and reduction of inflammation
This medication is used to treat various diseases. Firstly, it is effective for endocrine disorders related to hormone disorders such as adrenal insufficiency and thyroiditis. For rheumatic disorders, it is used to prevent acute exacerbations of chronic rheumatoid arthritis and rheumatic fever. It is also utilized for collagen vascular diseases such as lupus erythematosus and systemic vasculitis and for edematous diseases such as nephrotic syndrome. It is effective for allergic diseases, severe infectious diseases, blood disorders, gastrointestinal and liver diseases, and is also applied in the treatment of respiratory diseases such as pulmonary tuberculosis. This medication is helpful in the treatment of neurological and skin diseases, ophthalmic, otorhinolaryngological diseases, and various other conditions such as malignant lymphoma. Thus, this medication is used to improve and treat symptoms of several important diseases.
As hydrocortisone, the dosage is 10–120 mg per day, administered orally in 1 to 4 divided doses. It should be adjusted appropriately according to age and symptoms.
This medication should not be administered to certain patients. For example, individuals who are allergic to this medication or its components, those with incurable infections, systemic fungal infections, and patients with herpes simplex, shingles, and chickenpox should not use this medication. Additionally, patients with tuberculous diseases, herpes simplex keratitis, posterior subcapsular cataracts, hypertension, electrolyte abnormalities, thromboembolic disorders, those recovering from surgery, peptic ulcers, psychiatric disorders, severe osteoporosis, glaucoma, and those who have suffered acute myocardial infarction should use this medication with caution. This medication may exacerbate or mask infections, and diabetic patients need to be careful with blood sugar control. Special monitoring is also needed for osteoporosis, renal failure, heart failure, hypothyroidism, liver cirrhosis, fatty liver, myasthenia gravis, and the elderly. Side effects may include infections, endocrine abnormalities, gastrointestinal issues, psychiatric neurological symptoms, musculoskeletal disorders, fluid and electrolyte imbalances, eye problems, skin abnormalities, blood disorders, and cardiac issues, so patients should consult healthcare professionals immediately if symptoms appear. Long-term use of this medication may lead to adrenal insufficiency, and sudden discontinuation can cause severe withdrawal symptoms, so it should be tapered gradually. During treatment, patients may have reduced resistance to infections, so care should be taken to prevent infections, and specific vaccinations should be avoided. There may also be interactions with various medications, so if other medications are being taken, healthcare professionals must be informed. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should thoroughly consult with a doctor regarding the use of this medication, and it is safe to discontinue breastfeeding. In pediatric cases, side effects such as growth retardation may occur, so it should be used cautiously at the minimum dose, and caution is also necessary for the elderly due to the higher risk of side effects. It is important to always take the medication exactly as directed by healthcare professionals and to consult them immediately if any abnormal symptoms occur.
