View approved original text

This medicine is used to anesthetize the skin surface when inserting a syringe needle or during superficial surgical procedures. It can also be applied when surface anesthesia of the mucous membrane of the genital area is required, for example, before the removal of condyloma. Additionally, it is used for anesthetizing the skin surface before performing cleaning or superficial surgeries in areas such as leg ulcers, before removing fibrin, pus, or necrotic areas. It safely and effectively provides local anesthesia in various situations, reducing discomfort for patients.

Precautions

This drug is used as a local anesthetic but carries the risk of methemoglobinemia, a blood disorder. Extra caution is necessary for patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, congenital methemoglobinemia, those with heart or lung damage, infants under 6 months, and when used in conjunction with oxidizing agents. Symptoms may include bluish skin or abnormal changes in blood color, and if these occur, use should be immediately discontinued and medical attention sought. This drug should not be used for patients with hypersensitivity or wounds, mucous membranes, atopic dermatitis, infants under 3 months, and premature infants. Patients with anemia, liver disease, elderly patients, and those who are frail should use with caution, as skin reactions may occur. Common local reactions may include temporary symptoms such as pallor, redness, swelling, mild initial burning sensation, itching, tingling, skin irritation, and corneal irritation, while severe allergic reactions or anaphylactic shock may rarely occur. This drug can cause irritation if it comes into contact with the eyes, therefore it should not be used near the eyes or ears; if contact occurs, it should be washed immediately with clean water. Overdosage may lead to severe central nervous system and cardiovascular disturbances, so if symptoms arise, immediate medical treatment should be sought. The effects on the fetus during pregnancy have not been reported, but this drug should only be used when the benefits outweigh the risks, under a doctor's judgment. Nursing mothers should also be cautious as this drug may be excreted in breast milk. It should only be used sparingly in children, especially infants under 3 months, and should not be applied to the genital mucosa. The risk of methemoglobinemia may increase when used in conjunction with other medications, so if other medications are taken, it is essential to consult with a doctor or pharmacist. There have been reports of carcinogenic potential with high doses or long-term use of this drug, so it is important to adhere to the recommended dosage and duration of use.
