Short-term adjunctive treatment for weight loss in exogenous obesity
This medication is used to assist short-term weight loss in patients with exogenous obesity, defined as having a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater, or a BMI of 27 or higher with risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia, despite appropriate dietary and exercise regimens. It serves as an adjunct to weight reduction programs based on exercise, behavioral modification, and caloric restriction, and it is important to use it as monotherapy without combining it with other appetite suppressants. This drug effectively aids in improving weight loss in the management of obesity.
Adults: Administer 37.5 mg of phentermine hydrochloride orally once daily, before breakfast or 1 to 2 hours after breakfast. Use the minimum effective dose and adjust individually to achieve an adequate response. A dose of 18.75 mg once daily may be appropriate for some patients, and in some cases, taking 18.75 mg twice daily may be preferable. Avoid taking this medication late at night because it may cause insomnia. This medication should be administered for a short period (within 4 weeks). However, to reduce the risk of inappropriate use, treatment may be continued if the patient achieves satisfactory weight loss within the first 4 weeks (weight loss of at least 1.8 kg, or weight loss considered satisfactory by both the physician and the patient).
This medication should not be used in conjunction with other appetite suppressants. It must be used alone and only for a short duration for weight loss purposes. There is a risk of developing a serious lung condition known as primary pulmonary hypertension while taking this medication, so any symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting, or leg swelling should be reported to a doctor immediately. Due to the risk of heart valve disease, prolonged high-dose use or use in conjunction with other appetite suppressants should be avoided. Patients with certain conditions, such as advanced arteriosclerosis, cardiovascular disease, severe hypertension, hyperthyroidism, or glaucoma, should not take this medication. Additionally, patients who are mentally agitated or excited, have a history of substance abuse, are under 16 years of age, or are pregnant or potentially pregnant should not use this drug. Patients with diabetes or mild hypertension should exercise caution while using the drug and closely monitor blood glucose or blood pressure changes. This medication can cause increased or irregular heartbeats and side effects such as anxiety, insomnia, headache, gastrointestinal disturbances, and allergic reactions. It is advised to start with the minimum dosage to avoid overdose and to avoid sudden discontinuation after extended high-dose use, as this may lead to fatigue and depression. As this medication affects the central nervous system, caution is advised during hazardous activities such as driving or operating machinery. It may interact with other medications, especially antihypertensive drugs or alcohol, so it is advisable not to take them together. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should consult a doctor carefully before taking this drug, as it may pose risks to the fetus or infant. In the event of an overdose, serious symptoms such as anxiety, coma, seizures, heart problems, or vomiting may occur, requiring immediate emergency treatment. This medication should be stored in a safe place out of reach of children and is classified as a controlled substance with a risk of abuse, thus strict adherence to a doctor’s instructions is required. Long-term abuse of this medication can result in skin disorders, insomnia, irritability, personality changes, and in severe cases, psychotic symptoms akin to schizophrenia.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a tightly closed container to prevent exposure to air or moisture. It is recommended to maintain a storage temperature between 1 degree and 30 degrees Celsius. Proper storage will help preserve the medication's efficacy for a longer period.
