Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

  • Abnormal blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used as an adjunct when diet and exercise are not sufficient for blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can also be used alone, and when blood sugar control is inadequate, it can be used in combination with other oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin. For example, when blood sugar control is difficult with sulfonylureas or metformin monotherapy, this medication can be administered together with metformin to effectively improve blood sugar levels. This allows for smoother blood sugar control and aids in diabetes management.

How to take

Adult dose

Each patient's dosage should be individually adjusted. Take without chewing, with more than 1/2 cup of water. This medication is taken orally once daily, before breakfast or immediately before the first meal. For monotherapy, patients who have not previously received medication should start with 1 mg of glymepiride once daily and can increase the dose by 1 mg at 1 to 2 week intervals. Generally, doses greater than 4 mg provide little additional effect.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes or those in diabetic ketoacidosis or coma. Additionally, individuals allergic to this medication or its components, or with severe liver or kidney dysfunction, should not take it. It is also not safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women to use this medication. Patients with severe infections, pre- and post-surgical conditions, or serious injuries are advised to transition to insulin therapy. Gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhea or vomiting can lead to inadequate absorption of the medication, increasing the risk of hypoglycemia. Since this medication contains lactose, it should not be given to patients with specific genetic lactose intolerance. When starting the medication for the first time, there is an increased risk of hypoglycemia, so careful monitoring of blood sugar levels is essential. Elderly patients, those with poor nutritional status or irregular eating patterns, frequent alcohol consumption, and individuals with weakened kidney or liver function should also exercise caution. Furthermore, when taken in conjunction with other medications, it may interact and affect blood sugar control, so consulting with a physician is necessary. This medication lowers blood sugar levels which may cause symptoms of hypoglycemia. Symptoms of hypoglycemia can include headaches, severe hunger, dizziness, fatigue, confusion, drowsiness, and in severe cases, loss of consciousness. Rarely, there may be occurrences of visual disturbances, gastrointestinal symptoms, impaired liver function, blood abnormalities, and allergic reactions. If symptoms such as hives or difficulty breathing occur, contact a physician immediately. When taking this medication, it is crucial to maintain regular meals and exercise, and to regularly check blood sugar levels. If hypoglycemia occurs, sugar or sweetened drinks should be consumed immediately to manage the condition, and having a source of sugar on hand is advisable. In cases of pregnancy or breastfeeding, it is recommended to switch to insulin therapy instead of using this medication. In case of overdose, severe hypoglycemia may occur, so it is important to visit a hospital immediately for appropriate treatment. This medication should be kept out of the reach of children and stored in its original container to maintain its quality.
