Reduction of cardiovascular disease risk and improvement of hyperlipidemia
This medication helps reduce the risk of death from coronary heart disease and the risk of nonfatal myocardial infarction and stroke in adult patients at high risk for cardiovascular diseases such as coronary heart disease, diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, and stroke. It also reduces the risk that may occur after vascular interventions, protecting heart health. It is used in the treatment of hyperlipidemia, lowering bad cholesterol levels and raising good cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia, thereby improving the balance of blood lipids. Particularly in patients with familial hypercholesterolemia and certain pediatric patients meeting specific criteria, it effectively lowers cholesterol levels when used in conjunction with a dietary regimen. This medication is used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and improve hyperlipidemia.
1. For adult patients at high risk of coronary heart disease due to a history of coronary heart disease, diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, stroke, or other cerebrovascular diseases, administer 40 mg of simvastatin once daily. 2. For the treatment of hyperlipidemia, the usual starting dose is 20 mg once daily in the evening. Patients with mild to moderate hypercholesterolemia may start with 10 mg.
For pediatric patients aged 10-17 with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, administer 10 mg once daily in the evening. The recommended dosage range is 10-40 mg daily with a maximum dosage of 40 mg per day.
This medication primarily acts in the liver to lower blood cholesterol levels. However, it can cause muscle abnormalities, so if symptoms such as muscle pain or weakness occur during treatment, it must be reported to a doctor immediately. In particular, high-dose administration increases the risk of myopathy and rhabdomyolysis. This medication can affect liver function, thus it is safer not to use it in patients with liver disease or who have abnormally high liver enzyme levels. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as nursing mothers, should not take this medication, and it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy during treatment. There is a high potential for interaction with other medications, particularly with certain antifungals, antibiotics, immunosuppressants, calcium channel blockers, and some heart medications. It is advisable to avoid grapefruit juice during treatment and limit alcohol intake for liver health. Elderly patients, those with kidney or thyroid dysfunction, and patients with a history of muscle disease require careful monitoring when taking this medication. Regular blood tests to check liver function and muscle enzyme levels are recommended, and if abnormal findings are detected, consulting a physician is essential. This medication is not recommended for children under 10 years old or premenarche females. When taking this medication, it is important to inform the doctor or pharmacist about all currently taken medications, and to inform them when starting new medications. In the case of overdose, seek immediate medical treatment, and store this medication out of the reach of children.
