Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

View approved original text

This medication is used in conjunction with dietary and exercise therapy to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be administered alone, and in cases where blood sugar control is difficult, it can be used in combination with other hypoglycemic agents such as insulin or metformin. This helps effectively manage blood sugar and improve diabetes symptoms.

How to take

Adult dose

Take orally once a day. Swallow without chewing with more than half a cup of water. It should be taken before breakfast or immediately before the first meal. The initial dose is 1mg once daily and can be increased by 1mg at intervals of 1 to 2 weeks. Generally, there is little additional effect with doses above 4mg, but some patients may be able to increase to 6mg or 8mg. Control with a daily dose of 4mg.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or in a state of coma. Additionally, it should not be administered to patients allergic to this medication or its components or those with severe liver or kidney impairment. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take this medication, and special caution is needed in cases of severe infections or around the time of surgery, as well as in patients with gastrointestinal issues. Patients with hereditary lactose intolerance should also avoid this medication. There is a high risk of hypoglycemia during the early stages of treatment, so special care should be taken to monitor elderly patients, those with poor nutritional status or irregular eating habits, and those with impaired kidney or liver function. Symptoms of hypoglycemia may occur, so patients and their families should be well-informed about the signs and management of hypoglycemia, and dosage adjustment may be necessary if there is a risk of hypoglycemia. This medication may cause various side effects, including hypoglycemia, visual disturbances, gastrointestinal issues, liver dysfunction, blood disorders, and allergic reactions, so if any abnormal symptoms occur, consult a physician immediately. To manage blood sugar levels, dietary therapy, exercise therapy, and weight management are essential in conjunction with this medication, and regular monitoring of blood sugar and liver function tests is required during treatment. There are many interactions with other medications, so be sure to inform healthcare providers when taking other medications, and adjustments may be necessary. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding are advised to use insulin therapy instead of this medication, and the safety in children under 18 has not been established. In elderly patients, caution must be exercised in determining the medication dosage due to decreased kidney function. In the case of overdose, severe hypoglycemia may occur, requiring immediate emergency treatment, and it should be kept out of reach of children.
