Treatment of gastrointestinal diseases such as gastric and duodenal ulcers, and gastritis
This medication is used for the treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastritis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, gastroesophageal reflux disease, prevention of Mendelson's syndrome before anesthesia, and for ulcers due to surgery and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
Generally administered 2 tablets orally, twice daily in the morning and before bedtime, regardless of meals. 1) Gastric and duodenal ulcers Administer 2 tablets, twice daily, or 4 tablets once daily before bedtime. In particular, administering 4 tablets twice daily in the morning and before bedtime for patients with duodenal ulcers can achieve a higher treatment rate. For ulcers caused by NSAID administration or for use in conjunction with NSAIDs to prevent the occurrence of gastric and duodenal ulcers, the same dosage applies as well. Generally, conditions caused by NSAID administration typically heal within 8 weeks, although healing time may sometimes be prolonged depending on the patient. For recurrent ulcer patients who showed excellent efficacy from short-term therapy, the maintenance dosage is to administer 2 tablets once daily before bedtime. 2) Gastroesophageal reflux disease Administer 2 tablets, twice daily for 8 weeks, or 4 tablets once daily before bedtime. In cases of severe gastroesophageal reflux disease, the dosage can be increased to 4 tablets, four times daily. 3) Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome Start treatment with an initial dose of 2 tablets three times daily and increase as needed. In severe cases, under medical guidance, it may be increased up to 6 g of ranitidine per day. 4) Peptic ulcer, acute stress ulcer, and upper gastrointestinal bleeding due to acute mucosal lesions When oral administration becomes possible, switch from injection to oral administration of 2 tablets, twice daily. 5) Pre-anesthetic administration (prevention of Mendelson's syndrome) Administer 2 tablets two hours prior to induction of anesthesia. Additionally, administering 2 tablets on the evening before the surgery is beneficial.
This drug should not be administered to patients undergoing dialysis or those with impaired renal function. Additionally, it should not be given to patients with a history of allergic reactions to this drug or its components, patients with acute porphyria, patients who have undergone upper gastrointestinal surgery, pregnant women or those who may become pregnant, premature infants or newborns, and patients on potassium-restricted diets. Patients with liver dysfunction or a history of drug allergies, elderly patients, patients with a history of renal impairment, and those taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should use this medication with increased caution. This drug may mask symptoms of gastric cancer, so patients over middle age with newly developed or changed digestive symptoms should confirm the absence of malignant disease before using it. Patients with Helicobacter pylori in gastric and duodenal ulcers require eradication therapy. Patients in severe intensive care or those with hypophosphatemia, or patients with swallowing difficulties require special attention. Very rarely, severe allergic reactions such as anaphylactic shock may occur while taking this medication, so if any unusual symptoms arise, treatment should be stopped immediately and appropriate medical attention sought. If adverse reactions appear such as skin rash, urticaria, angioedema, fever, or bronchospasm, use should be discontinued. Abnormalities in blood tests may occur, so if symptoms like fatigue, bleeding, or fever appear, immediate consultation with medical personnel is necessary. Liver dysfunction, arrhythmias, digestive symptoms (nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, etc.), dizziness, drowsiness, mental confusion, and headaches have also been reported, requiring caution. If no treatment effect is observed without long-term use, it is advisable to switch to another medication, and elderly patients or those with chronic lung disease, diabetes, or immunocompromised conditions should be mindful of the increased risk of pneumonia. Patients experiencing dizziness or sleepiness while taking this medication should avoid driving or operating dangerous machinery. This medication may interact with other drugs, so it is important to inform healthcare providers, especially when used with anticoagulants, certain antibiotics, or anticonvulsants, and take care to adjust dosing intervals as necessary. Pregnant or breastfeeding women are advised not to use this medication, and its safety in children has not been established, so it is better to avoid administration in pediatrics. In cases of overdose, treatment measures such as vomiting or gastric lavage may be necessary, and in severe cases, hemodialysis can be performed to remove it. This medication can reduce gastric acid secretion, potentially promoting bacterial growth in the stomach; therefore, regular monitoring, including eye examinations, is necessary when used for long periods.
