This medication helps improve consciousness disorders and neurological disorders caused by increased intracranial pressure and intracranial edema, alleviating symptoms caused by cerebral infarction, intracerebral hemorrhage, head trauma, subarachnoid hemorrhage, brain tumors, and meningitis. It is also effective in reducing brain volume before and after neurosurgery and in situations requiring decreased intraocular pressure during ophthalmic surgery. Thus, this medication is used to improve various symptoms related to the brain and ophthalmology as well as post-operative management.

How it is given

Adult administration

Administer 200 to 500 mL once, 1 to 2 times a day, by slow intravenous infusion over 2 to 3 hours per 500 mL. The administration period is usually 1 to 2 weeks. For reducing brain volume during neurosurgery, administer 500 mL over 30 minutes by slow intravenous infusion. For reducing intraocular pressure and during ophthalmic surgery, administer 300 to 500 mL over 45 to 90 minutes by slow intravenous infusion. Adjust the dosage appropriately according to age and symptoms.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients who are congenitally unable to properly metabolize glycerol or fructose. Administration to these patients may result in severe hypoglycemia. Patients with heart or circulatory system issues should use this medication with caution as it may increase blood volume and put additional strain on the heart. Patients with impaired renal function should also use it cautiously. Excessive administration of water and sodium chloride present in this medication may worsen symptoms. Patients with a condition called diabetes insipidus should be careful as this medication may affect electrolyte balance and worsen their symptoms. Diabetic patients need to be cautious as non-ketotic hyperosmolar coma may occur during the use of this medication. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea or vomiting may appear during the use of this medication. There may also be blood in the urine or changes in urination frequency. Metabolic abnormalities may arise, such as low potassium levels in the blood or elevated sodium levels. There is also a risk of abnormally high blood sugar. Headaches, dry mouth, arm pain, elevated blood pressure, and lethargy may occasionally occur. Rapid and excessive administration of this medication may lead to a serious condition called lactic acidosis. If such symptoms occur, appropriate treatment should be received immediately. Caution is required when rapidly administering a solution with high glycerol concentration due to the risks of hemolysis, renal impairment, and hyperglycemia. This medication must be used in accordance with prescribed dosages and techniques, and it should only be used after the cause of bleeding has been completely removed in patients suspected of having acute subdural or epidural hematomas. Otherwise, intracranial pressure may drop, causing rebleeding. Since sodium chloride is included, patients who need to limit salt intake should be particularly cautious when using this medication. Fructose is present, and rapid or excessive administration may lead to the risk of lactic acidosis, so caution is required. Elderly patients are more likely to have reduced bodily functions, so hydration and electrolyte status should be closely monitored, and it should be administered carefully. Before administration, ensure the patient urinates to prevent the urge to urinate, and clean the patient's skin and equipment to prevent infection during administration. In cold seasons, this medication should be warmed to body temperature before use, and any remaining medication should be discarded immediately after opening.
