Efficacy & effects
This medication is used to relieve various symptoms such as dyspnea caused by obstructive airway diseases like bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema. It also prevents attacks of congestive heart failure and cardiac asthma and is effective in treating respiratory abnormalities related to Cheyne-Stokes respiration. Therefore, it can help improve a variety of respiratory and cardiac-related symptoms.
Dosage
Adults: As aminophylline hydrate, dilute 250 mg for a single dose in 1 to 2 times daily with normal saline or dextrose injection over 5 to 10 minutes via slow intravenous or drip infusion. The interval between doses should be more than 8 hours, and the maximum dose is 12 mg per kg of body weight per day. Adjust as appropriate based on symptoms.
Precautions
This medication should have blood concentration monitored periodically to adjust the dosage. If blood concentration is too high, serious side effects such as seizures or rapid heart rate may occur. Patients with heart disease should exercise particular caution when using this medication. When using the ampoule injection, care must be taken to avoid glass fragments contaminating the injection solution while opening the container, especially when used for children or the elderly. Patients who are allergic to this medication or its components, or have had hypersensitivity reactions to xanthine medications, should not use this medication. This medication should not be administered to patients with ulcers in the stomach or duodenum, porphyria, acute tachyarrhythmias, myocardial infarction and other specific conditions. Patients with epilepsy, hyperthyroidism, poor kidney or liver function, high blood pressure, and women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should use this medication with caution. This medication may occasionally cause side effects such as headache, insomnia, dizziness, irregular heartbeats, indigestion, and skin rashes, and overdose may lead to seizures or coma. Care should be taken when using this medication, as interactions may occur with other drugs, especially central nervous system stimulants, certain antibiotics, cardiac medications, and beta-blockers. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should use this medication cautiously under medical supervision, as it may affect the fetus or infant. It is preferable not to use this medication in infants under 6 months, and caution should be taken in children with a history of seizures as there is a risk of convulsions. Elderly patients may require dose adjustment due to reduced liver function, which could result in higher blood concentrations of this medication. This medication can have more severe side effects if blood concentrations are high, making it important to monitor blood levels to establish an appropriate dosing plan. Rapid administration of the injection can lead to severe reactions such as arrhythmias or shock; therefore, it must be diluted and injected slowly.
